Job Purpose/Description

- The Subject Guide will serve as a role model student, lead sessions and discussions, and offer one-on-one tutoring to push students to higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
- Subjects needed: (Details for the specific subjects below)
- CHM2200/2210 Organic Chemistry
- CHM1110/1120 General Chemistry
- CHM1040 General Organic & BioChem
- Nursing Semester 1, 2, & 3
- NSG3050 Healthcare Research and Appraisal

Job Duties

- Host academic support sessions (1-2 times/week) to guide students through the course content for the assigned course.

Depending on the course, the session could require planning and preparation, as well as active facilitation. Other courses involve drop-in hours when the Guide is prepared to help students who drop in with questions.

- Serve as a tutor for the specific course.
- Tutor students (individual and small groups) in-person and online (through Zoom) by appointment.
- Establish personal contact and rapport with students while being identified as an academic resource and role model.
- Implement a student needs inquiry and follow up on the results as needed.
- Create a welcoming academic environment for students.
- Maintain an accurate, up-to-date Google Calendar.

- Support faculty’s messaging and content to help students use the language of the discipline and discuss concepts in a supportive environment.
- Provide general academic success strategies and serve as a role model student.
- Communicate clearly with the class verbally and through email.




- Attend all initial training (roughly 4 hours) and ongoing team meetings (roughly 8 hrs total) periodically throughout the year.
- Meet and/or communicate occasionally with faculty and the program coordinator to debrief, set goals, and plan sessions.
- Complete necessary paperwork (attendance sheets, timesheet, sign-in sheets, and evaluations).
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties may be assigned and/or necessary.

Required Qualifications

- Must be a current CSS student.
- Must have mastery of the specific course for which you are applying.
- Skilled poise to represent the College.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfort with public speaking and presenting.
- Strong service orientation and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people in a friendly, professional manner.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Job functions require sitting, standing, and walking during shifts.
- Ability to perform all of the above functions during an assigned workday without significant risk of injury.

Preferred Qualifications

- Federal work-study eligibility is preferred.
- Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
- Junior or senior status.
- Students with leadership experience.
- Experience providing academic support.
- Experience facilitating group activities

Special Instructions to Applicants

- Subject Guide appointments are for one full academic year, excluding summer session
