[email protected] The Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, Shared Health Manitoba, and the St. Boniface Hospital’s Cardiac Sciences Program invite applications for an Electrophysiologist in the Section of Cardiology.
This is a geographical, full-time, contingent position at the Assistant, Associate or Professor rank commencing July 1, 2027 or as soon thereafter as possible, for a term of 2 years, renewable upon favourable review. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and will consider the incumbent’s current academic rank.
This is an academic position with substantial cardiac resources within the region, primarily at two academic health centres (St.
Boniface
Hospital and Health Sciences Centre), serving the needs of Manitoba, Nunavut, and Northwestern Ontario, with a catchment of over 1.3 million population. The arrhythmia/electrophysiology team is located at St.
Boniface
Hospital. There are two procedural labs providing device implantation and ablation services over a total of 10 full days a week. The device lab is one of the busiest in the country, with approximately 950 pacemaker and 300 high-powered device- related procedures per year. Advanced device procedures include implantation/revision of cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices, subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillators, leadless pacing, and conduction system pacing. Approximately 650 ablation procedures are performed annually. Ablation services provided include ablation of supraventricular tachycardias, cryoballoon and radiofrequency atrial fibrillation ablation (availability of pulsed-field ablation anticipated shortly), ablation of complex atrial arrhythmias requiring 3D electroanatomical mapping, and ablation of ventricular arrhythmias in both structurally normal and abnormal hearts. Zero fluoroscopy procedures are facilitated by the availability of local mapping expertise and intracardiac echocardiography. Inpatient consultative services are provided for a large patient population with a variety of comorbidites and acuity Outpatient arrhythmia services are provided through physician-run clinics, a nurse practitioner-led atrial fibrilllation clinic, and a nurse-run device clinic. The device clinic sees a very high volume of patients, with approximately 7000 pacemaker visits, 3500 ICD visits and 5000 remote encounters per year. The arrhythmia team is actively involved in clinical trials and is recognized nationally in the electrophysiology community.
There are presently 31 full-time academic cardiologists within the Section of Cardiology with major clinical and investigative responsibilities in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography and magnetic resonance, nuclear cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, palliative care, and heart failure and cardiac transplantation.
The successful applicant will have academic potential, including demonstration of effective interdisciplinary communication,
a record of prior training in Cardiac Electrophysiology, as well as competency in general cardiology. While not considered mandatory, additional proficiency in areas such as cardiogenetics, advanced VT ablation (epicardial access, bipolar RF, alcohol septal ablation), laser lead extraction, and/or familiarity with pulsed-field ablation would be considered favourably. They must also have clinical and teaching skills to further the aims of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Adult Cardiology.
Candidates must have senior specialty qualifications in Adult Cardiology in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Certification in Adult Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is preferred.
