Job Summary and Requirements

This posting will be used to fill 2 term full-time positions working 75 hours bi-weekly ending August 18, 2028; part-time hours may be considered. It will establish a 6-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar term positions.

Who we are

The Government of Yukon's Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services division is known for its cutting-edge, holistic, trauma informed and culturally accessible approach to providing mental health and substance use supports to all Yukoners. The Child, Youth and Family Treatment Team is a team that operates within Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services. We aim to provide a range of individual, group and family counselling and support services to school-aged children, youth and families in the Yukon.

Your role

Working as a member of the Mental Wellness and Substance Use team, the Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellor provides comprehensive assessment, treatment services and case management to children and youth ages 5 to 18, and their families, who may be affected by any combination of mental health problems, diagnosed mental illness, and/or problematic substance use and addiction. Within the context of a client-centered care model, the Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellor will perform duties that support assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention,



aftercare services, consultation, and individual counselling and group programming to facilitate and coordinate client access to services.

The Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellors will work as part of a team of mental wellness professionals in Whitehorse and will have the responsibility to provide appropriate and specialized assessment and evidence-based treatment services for a full range of presenting issues, including concurrent disorders.

Important application and job requirements

Masters degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Counselling, or other mental health related disciplines; a PHD with an equivalent clinical masters or doctorate's degree may also be considered;

Recent experience providing assessment and treatment planning for children, youth, and/or families;

Experience delivering individual counselling for children, youth and/or families;

Experience with group programming with children, youth, and/or families;

Experience providing case management services.

Formal training and/or experience in play therapy, play-based interventions,



or other therapeutic modalities used to support children and youth would be an asset.

Understanding of two-eyed seeing and trauma informed approach to client care

Ability to effectively communicate with clients, community members, other agencies, and maintain professionalism and ethics in the workplace and community.

Effective written and oral communication supported by strong conflict resolution skills

Ability to work effectively in a team environment, serve as a positive team member, and accept and provide constructive feedback.

Understanding of collaborative health care delivery systems, and the continuum of services available to clients at different stages of their lives,

Knowledge, and the ability to work within, the stages of change model, i.e. ability to adapt interactions to support engagement and the wellness of clients.

Ability to complete and maintain comprehensive clinical records.

Ability to employ evidence-based strategies for different mental health presentations in children and youth

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

Verification of post-secondary degree(s)

Vulnerable Sector RCMP Security clearance

TB screening

Valid class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent

WHMIS 2015 (within one month of hire)

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

Must be comfortable working with children ages 5 to 12 and youth ages 13 to 18

Regularly exposed to depressed, anxious, suicidal, emotional, angry and potentially aggressive clients and/or caregivers

Workplace stresses arise from counseling clients with addictions and mental health who are experiencing issues of a life crisis (serious illness, suicide, death, violence, relationship breakdowns, etc.)

May be exposed to wilderness and/or remote locations and environments; the incumbent may be required to travel within the Yukon on a regular basis during all weather conditions

May be required to drive to work in alternate locations such as school, physician office, etc.

May be required to work on weekends and evenings
