Position Summary
The Innovation Centres Research Officer supports the activities of the Division of Applied Research both from a technical and business perspective. This position will prepare business and research cases based on input from the Applied Research Leader or Principle Investigator (PI). This information will support targeted growth areas. In addition, based on specific skill sets of the incumbent, this position will support grant or project work, including coordinating research teams, and organizing events in connection with the projects. They will be an integral part of the Applied Research and Innovation department.
This position is required to interact with external clients, prepare documents for review by Applied Research Leader or Principle Investigator (PI), and gather information to meet client needs. The incumbent is expected to act in an accountable manner to the department and the RDP in all aspects of the job, particularly in matters pertaining to community interaction or partners
Position Responsibilities
Market Intelligence and Research
- Conducts thorough market intelligence and research documents based on direction from Applied Research Leaders, and/or PI
- Summarizes and presents the results of research
- Provides recommendations or information to leader or PI, for use in strategic planning based on research efforts
- Prepares research and business cases in collaboration with leader, PI, and / or Innovation Centres team members
- Provides information to leader or PI for strategic planning
- Works independently to gather market intelligence and research as well as technical tasks and suggest solutions
- Provide creative solutions options and support to the leader or PI to meet the requirements of the objectives of the project
- Communicate ideas, concerns, and solutions effectively in written and verbal platforms within the research teams, as well as within the Division, externally and with other areas of the campus
Project Support
- Communicates clearly with the leader or PI regarding the purpose, plans, and outcomes of assigned projects, in collaboration with the research team.
- Provides input to the PI for their determining best route to take to achieve the project objective
- Modifies project scopes of work based on project outcomes and the direction provided by the PI.
- Clearly communicates the progress of the project to the leader or PI, raising concerns to resolve.
- Solve problems on an on-going basis and make decisions that are often unique to the situation and takes problems complex in nature to the leader or PI
- Acts in an accountable manner to the department, division, and the Polytechnic in all aspects of the job, particularly in matters pertaining to industry interaction
- Ensures research teams are following OH&S;
Grant Administration and Coordination Support
- Coordinates timely submission of narrative reports required by funding and granting agencies.
- Contributes to the development of proposals for PI review.
- Maintain project documents in digital format adhering to the digital document library standards
Continuous Growth and Acquisition of Current Skills
- Actively participates in training and career development activities in accordance with goal and development plan and as they become available
- Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedure in order to best meet the needs of the research team
- Actively acquires knowledge and skills related to this position
Required Qualifications
- Proven strong work ethic, attendance record and productivity in an independent work environment demonstrated through previous employment, education, or volunteer experience.
- Proven ability to work within a team and communicate positively supporting new and different ideas
- Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in conducting literature reviews, summarizing, and incorporating concepts of research
- Ability to actively engage and collaborate effectively with a broad range of individuals ranging from internal stakeholders to business partners to external consultants is critical to the success of this position
- Effective analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with attention for detail
- Highly developed interpersonal skills for effective conflict resolution and relationship building
- Strong organizational and time management skills, keeping in mind the needs of business and prioritizing multiple clients’ demands
- Proficient in a variety of computer applications including Office 365
- Ability to self-manage and work independently with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated experience in an entrepreneurial environment
Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.

Hours of Work
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week.
