Journey Helper - Position Summary

The Journey Helper provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and relative-centered support within a residential healing environment. Working under the direction of the Manitou House Pathfinder and Lead Journey Helper, the Journey Helper supports daily operations, promotes safety and wellness, and assists relatives in achieving their goals while fostering successful community reintegration.

Responsible For

Program and Operational Support

· Participate in shift handovers, review communications, and maintain operational records throughout the shift.

· Conduct regular wellness, safety, security, and facility checks while ensuring accurate relative tracking procedures.

· Monitor and maintain the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the residence and surrounding environment.

· Assist with daily house operations, including meal preparation, inventory monitoring, transportation, and general housekeeping.

· Ensure visitor management, facility access, and security procedures are followed.

· Complete required documentation, reports, and administrative tasks and perform additional duties as assigned.

Relative Support and Operations

· Provide daily support, guidance, supervision, and encouragement to relatives in a residential healing setting.

· Build positive relationships that promote wellness, stability, accountability, and successful community reintegration.

· Support relatives with case planning, goal setting, problem-solving, and access to community resources.

· Observe, document, and communicate relative progress, concerns, behavioural changes, and emerging needs.

· Respond appropriately to incidents, breaches, crises, and emergencies while following established procedures.

· Facilitate and support cultural, recreational, life-skills,



and community-based programming opportunities.

Qualifications

- High School Diploma required; a combination of post-secondary education, lived experience, cultural knowledge, and relevant experience will be considered.
- Minimum two years of experience in a residential, community corrections, healing lodge, social service, or rehabilitative setting preferred.
- Previous leadership, supervisory, mentoring, or team coordination experience preferred.
- Experience working with Correctional Service Canada (CSC), justice agencies, Indigenous organizations, or community-based support programs is considered an asset.
- Solid crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, OMS (Offender Management System), and other required software.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, mental health supports, interpersonal communication, and Indigenous healing approaches, including supporting individuals impacted by intergenerational and historical trauma.
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, history, and ways of life.
- Knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and other relevant legislation or initiatives.
- Hold and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 4 or Class 5 Driver's Licence (preferred).
- Hold and maintain First Aid/CPR and Mental Health First Aid Certification.
- Hold and maintain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification or other training certifications required by NCO.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Enhanced Security Clearance.

- Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Ability to respond effectively to crisis situations and support relatives experiencing complex challenges.
- Ability to perform physical duties associated with residential operations, safety, and emergency response.
- Commitment to cultural safety, reconciliation, and Indigenous healing approaches in all helping practices.

Pay: From $24.00 per hour
