Are you passionate about the environment? Do you have a desire to make an impact on our planet in the work you do? Scotia Recycling is seeking environmentally minded people to join us part time in our Materials Recycling Facilities in Paradise.
Position Overview:
The Bottle Sorter will be responsible for providing customer service in a Green Depot, ensuring that all products received for recycling are acceptable, appropriately packaged, and sorted. Other responsibilities will include the accurate counting of materials brought in, providing payment for recyclable materials, setting up customer accounts, proper stacking of materials and moving skids of recyclable materials following safe storage procedures.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Greet customers entering establishments.
- Accept recyclable materials from the public.
- Accurately count the number of acceptable recyclable materials eligible for payment.
- Set up employee accounts in the Tomra system.
- Provide payment for materials.
- Resolve customer complaints.
- Compile and maintain non-monetary reports and records.
- Keep periodic balance sheets of amounts and numbers of transactions.
- Answer customers' questions.
- Compute and record totals of transactions.
- Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change.
- Ensure the cleanliness of the recyclable materials.
- Place recyclable materials into appropriate containers.
- Properly stack recyclable materials of skids.
- Move full skids into storage as appropriate.
- Follow safety procedures at all times.
- Operate compacting machines as required.
- Use safe lifting tools (dollies, lift/jack trucks, etc.) as appropriate.
- Perform minor property maintenance duties such as sweeping, trimming shrubs, mopping floors and cleaning washrooms.
- Issue receipts to customers.
- Maintain clean and orderly customer returns area.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Recycling depot experience preferred.
- Strong customer service and troubleshooting skills.
- Conflict resolution, negotiation, and objection handling skills.
- Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
- Able to work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Able to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
- Able to work well under pressure.
- Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Proven data entry and typing skills.
- Professional appearance and manners.
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
Working Conditions:
- Manual dexterity required.
- Overtime as required.
- Lifting or moving up to 50lbs may be required.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- May be exposed to broken bottles, sharp objects and hazardous and biohazardous materials.
- Work is performed in an industrial building, at times amid noise levels (under 85 dBA), moving mechanical parts, in conditions such as high humidity, odors, dust and exposure to hot and cold temperatures. Some work is outside, in all weather conditions.
