Coffee Roasting Assistant
Summary
The Roasting Assistant plays a critical support role within the roasting department by managing green coffee preparation, silo levels, and material flow to ensure roasting operations run smoothly and efficiently. This position is responsible for preparing green coffee for roasting, communicating upcoming needs with the roasting team, and moving roasted coffee to packaging once quality checks are completed.
The Roasting Assistant must communicate clearly, work diligently, and respond proactively to changing priorities. This role also serves as a development position, with opportunities to learn roasting skills over time and progress toward a Production Roaster role. The Roasting Assistant may assist other departments, including Packaging and Warehouse, when operationally required.
Areas of Responsibility
Green Coffee Handling & Preparation
- Load, monitor, and manage green coffee levels in silos
- Weigh and prepare green coffee required for upcoming roasts according to the daily roasting schedule
- Ensure green coffee is staged, labeled, and ready in advance to support uninterrupted roasting operations
- Monitor green coffee usage and notify the Roasting Supervisor of low levels or discrepancies
- Handle green coffee carefully to protect quality, traceability, and food safety
Roasting Support & Communication
- Communicate regularly with the Production Roaster and Roasting Supervisor to understand upcoming roasting needs
- Adjust preparation priorities in real time to support roasting flow and schedule changes
- Ensure green coffee is prepared accurately and delivered to the roaster in the correct sequence
- Support roasters during production as required
Post-Roast Handling & Transfer
- Move roasted coffee to designated packaging or staging areas after roasters have completed weighing and color verification
- Ensure roasted coffee is transferred, labeled, and staged correctly to maintain traceability and FIFO
- Communicate any issues or delays in roasted coffee movement promptly
- Complete all blending, grinding and portion pack coffee preparation
Build Assemblies & Documentation
- Accurately complete roast logs, batch records, and required production documentation
- Complete build assemblies and production records as trained and directed
- Ensure all documentation supports traceability, inventory accuracy, and audit readiness
- Escalate documentation discrepancies or system issues promptly to the Roasting Supervisor
Food Safety, Sanitation & Facility Standards
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, hygiene, and GMP procedures applicable to roasting operations
- Participate in pre-operational checks and scheduled cleaning tasks as assigned
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation and shared roasting/green coffee areas
- Handle products in a manner that protects food safety, traceability, and product integrity
- Report safety, quality or equipment concerns/repairs immediately to the Roasting Supervisor or Product & Operations Manager
Training & Skill Development
- Learn roasting fundamentals, equipment operation, and roast profiles as time permits
- Support roasting activities under supervision for training and development purposes
- Participate in cupping sessions, quality discussions, and training opportunities as assigned
- Demonstrate readiness and skill progression toward a future Production Coffee Roaster role
Cross-Department Support & Professional Conduct
- Assist Packaging and Warehouse teams when required to support overall operational flow
- Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with supervisors and team members
- Work efficiently, proactively, and with a sense of urgency
- Support a positive team environment and avoid gossip or speculation
- Escalate questions, concerns, or issues directly to the Roasting Supervisor
You’re a great fit if you have:
- Experience in food production, warehouse, or manufacturing environments (coffee experience an asset)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely
- Comfort handling physical tasks including lifting, weighing, and moving product
- Ability to communicate clearly and anticipate next steps
- Robust work ethic and ability to move diligently in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments
- Proficiency with basic production documentation including Microsoft & Excel
- Minimum high school education
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00-$21.00 per hour
