Personal Support Worker - St. Lawrence, Toronto - CAD$135.00/week

Description

We're seeking a compassionate, reliable caregiver to support a remarkable woman approaching her 100th birthday who lives independently in downtown Toronto near the St. Lawrence Market. Despite significant vision loss from macular degeneration and reduced mobility requiring a walker, she maintains a vibrant spirit and strong desire for independence.

About the Client:

Our client is a larger-than-life figure in the performing arts community—an award-winning actor, producer, and publicist who has been a founding member of her co-op residence. While she remains mentally sharp and engaged, her declining vision has made daily tasks increasingly challenging and frustrating. She's fiercely independent but recognizes she needs additional support beyond her current limited care schedule. She shares her home with a beloved cat named Julie and values maintaining her dignity and autonomy.

Responsibilities:

• Provide companionship and emotional support during visits • Assist with bathing and personal hygiene (currently only twice weekly, needs improvement) • Help with light housekeeping and tidying—she frequently drops items due to vision loss • Accompany her on walks to the St. Lawrence Market and assist with street crossings • Support with simple meal preparation or cooking together (she loves making soup) • Read aloud to her—she misses reading independently • Play cards or solitaire together • Help manage her iPad for messages and communication • Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed • Ensure safety throughout the home environment

What We're Looking For:

• Experience supporting seniors with vision impairment and mobility limitations • Calm,

patient demeanor with genuine warmth • Solid communication skills and reliability • Ability to take initiative while respecting independence • Comfortable with cats (non-negotiable) • English-speaking • Weekend availability essential

Schedule:

We're starting with a few visits per week, including Sunday afternoons (priority) and Thursday afternoons. Each visit will be 2-3 hours. The family provides most meals and handles litter box duties, so focus remains on companionship, personal care, and safety support. This schedule supplements existing weekday morning care and ensures consistent weekend coverage.

Additional Considerations

Client has significant vision loss due to macular degeneration and uses a walker. She requires assistance with bathing (currently only twice weekly), support with compression stockings, and monitoring for safety due to frequent dropping of items. She has a cat named Julie that she is very attached to and cares for independently. Client is highly independent by nature and resistant to accepting help, so caregiver must be respectful of her autonomy while ensuring safety. She lives in a performing arts co-op building downtown Toronto near St. Lawrence Market, walking distance from family. Weekend coverage is particularly important as family needs respite on Sundays.
