Job Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician (OT) is responsible for assisting the Ophthalmologists and staff of The Eye Institute at Kensington Health, Ophthalmology Clinics in providing high-quality patient care through the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders and disease. The OT is also responsible for assisting the Director of The Eye Institute at Kensington Health with administrative duties related to the expansion of services in the clinic.

Responsibilities

Client Driven:

- Assists Ophthalmologists in the clinics by accurately and efficiently testing patients’ far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception, applying eye drops to anesthetize or dilate the eye, obtaining intraocular pressure, autorefraction, manifest refraction, pupil assessment, angle assessment, and slit lamp exam.

- Accurately and efficiently performs diagnostic tests including A-scan, IOL Master, OCT, Humphrey Visual Field, anterior segment photography, fundus photos, topography and tomography scans.

- Perform other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologists.

- Provides instructions to patients concerning their eye care in accordance with clinic policies and protocols. Counsel patients about cataract surgery options.

- Assists the Director of the Eye Institute at Kensington Health with administrative duties related to the expansion of services in the clinic.

- Facilitates timely and accurate medical records management and ensures each record contains appropriate documentation as per established policy of medical record content.

- Establishes and maintains good relations and professionalism when connecting with patients, their families,



and the Kensington Health community both in the clinic and in the community.

- Provides accurate information to the public in keeping with The Eye Institute at Kensington Health, Ophthalmology Clinics policies and procedures.

- Performs other duties as required and assigned by the Director of The Eye Institute at Kensington Health and the medical team of the Ophthalmology Clinics.

Service Excellence:

- Follows established processes to obtain, manage and utilize patient information to enhance and improve individual and organizational performance in patient care.

- Assures a current and complete medical record is obtained for every patient.

- Promotes the philosophy and practices of patient-centered care and promotes the Patient’s Bill of Rights.

- Communicates with and supports patients and their families in their involvement and participation in decision making with respect to their vision care.

- Adheres to the Policies and Procedures of The Eye Institute at Kensington Health, Ophthalmology Clinics.

- Provides confidentiality, integrity and security of medical records and patient information.

- Maintains confidentiality and integrity of organizational activities.

- Ensures that the Director of Clinical and Research Services is informed of any problems in a timely fashion.

Professional People:

- Maintains competency by attending workshops and conferences, participating on clinic/professional committees as required, annually reviewing clinic policies and procedures, and reading professional journals/articles as required.

- Uses scientific knowledge in a systematic approach to identifying issues and in managing conflicts.

- Promotes a safe environment in which The Eye Institute at Kensington Health, Ophthalmology Clinics team works co-operatively and supportively.

- Participates in all mandatory training programs including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Program, Quality Improvement, Fire Safety, WHMIS, etc.

- Responsible for working safely in compliance with accepted safe work practices, procedures and legislated health and safety standards. Employees must: use and wear the equipment, protective devices and personal protective equipment as required; report hazards, accidents, and the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device; attend all required health and safety training and follow all established safe work procedures.

- Effectively plans and manages duties and assignments in order of priority.

Innovative Approaches:

- Continually investigates and suggest/provide ideas, resources and suggestions supporting the move to recent and improved methods of delivering services to our patients.

- Fosters team building and supports innovative ideas and changes.

- Communicates and assists in conflict management when appropriate.

Financially Responsible:

- Performs basic equipment maintenance and log information for tracking purposes and identifies supplies to be ordered by admin team in a timely manner.

- Provides input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required.

- Assists with inventory control when required.

- Immediately notifies the Director of Clinical and Research Services if equipment and supplies require maintenance.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities:

- Possess a good eye for detail due to the complexity of the position.

- Excellent presentation skills, with an ability to adapt to a variety of patient types.

- Ability to manage patient expectations and concerns.

- Team-oriented and collaborative, demonstrate a willingness to learn and coach others

- Willing to work flex hours to meet the needs of the patients and clinic.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

- Technical minded with manual dexterity required for finer detail work.

- Experience working in a fact paced, healthcare environment

- Experience with a number of diagnostic tools and tests, including topography, refraction, slit lamp examinations, etc.

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

- Bsc or equivalent preferred.

- Mandatory Certification: Certified Ophthalmic Technologist Certification.

- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) Certification an asset.
