Position Summary
The Gerts Café Shift Lead plays a pivotal role in orchestrating the daily operations of our bustling café, ensuring a top-notch experience for both customers and staff. This dynamic position blends leadership, hands-on service, and strategic oversight to create a thriving café environment. As the key point of contact during your shifts, you'll be responsible for supervising and motivating a team of baristas, handling daily operational tasks, and delivering exceptional customer service.
In this role, you will manage shift schedules, train and mentor recent team members, and resolve any customer issues or complaints with professionalism and efficiency. Your responsibilities also include supporting kitchen operations. A key aspect of your role involves amplifying the café’s brand by creating and managing engaging social media content by collaborating with the SSMU Communications Coordinator, promoting menu items, events, and specials, and developing a vibrant online presence that showcases the café’s unique character.
Responsibilities
- Oversee Daily Operations: Manage the café’s daily functions, ensuring smooth operation and adherence to quality standards, including anticipating customer, store, and employee needs by evaluating the environment regularly.
- Team Leadership: Lead, train, and support baristas and other staff members, fostering a positive and productive work environment while consistently communicating with management about general operations, current and future needs, and employee feedback.
- Customer Service Excellence: Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints effectively, providing enthusiastic and engaging service, and educating guests about the menu to maintain high levels of satisfaction.
- Financial Management: Handle card transactions accurately through the point-of-sale system, keep an eye on the reports from the day, resolve any outstanding issues and open transactions and process refunds as needed.
- Menu Preparation: Prepare and serve a variety of beverages, including coffee, tea, and espresso drinks (both hot and cold), as well as food items according to café standards. Update menus as needed to reflect out-of-stock items and seasonal changes, write down daily specials on menu boards,
and ensure accurate communication of menu updates to both staff and customers.
- Social Media and Marketing: Develop and implement social media strategies to enhance the café’s online presence, promote menu items, events, and specials, and maintain a vibrant online profile in tandem with and with the approval of the Café Manager.
- Inventory and Stock Management: Conduct regular inventory checks, manage stock levels, restock supplies as needed, maintain freshness standards for consumable products, control waste effectively, receive orders and ensure delivery slips are kept for recording and accounting.
- Equipment maintenance: Keep an eye on cafe equipment (fridges, ice machine, espresso machine, etc. and report any issues and malfunctions to the Cafe Manager).
- Cleanliness and Upkeep: Maintain and clean the seating area, merchandise displays, and overall café environment to ensure a welcoming and organized space.
- Event Coordination: Support and coordinate the planning and execution of special events, ensuring a seamless experience for all guests.
- Opening and Closing Procedures: Assist in the opening and closing of the café, ensuring operational readiness and security of the premises.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure that all health, safety, and sanitation regulations are followed, maintaining a safe and clean environment for both staff and customers. Ensure that all accidents and incidents are documented in the appropriate logs and reported to the manager.
- Staff Performance Management: Monitor and evaluate staff performance, providing feedback and coaching to support professional development and maintain high service standards. For any issues requiring disciplinary action or escalation, report detailed observations and recommendations to the Café Manager for further review and resolution.
- Brand Representation: Represent the SSMU with enthusiasm, confidence, and a positive attitude, while reinforcing the café’s reputation and core values.
Qualifications Required
- Must be available to work at least two shifts of the following: Monday 8:00am - 12:45pm, Wednesday - Friday 1:00pm - 5:45pm
- Two 2 years of experience in a café, including at least (1) year in a direct supervisory role.
- Non-full-time university students preferred to accommodate flexible scheduling and avoid conflicts with academic commitments.
- Friendly and energetic demeanor with a passion for providing excellent customer service.
- Proven ability to lead,
train, and motivate a team, with experience in and fostering a positive work environment.
- Strong skills in effectively and professionally resolving customer and staff issues, maintaining high standards of service and satisfaction.
- Excellent communication skills in both English and French, facilitating effective interaction with customers and staff.
- Ability to handle customer complaints and issues with professionalism, focusing on delivering high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Experience in managing financial accounts, and reconciling records accurately.
- Ability to oversee daily café operations, including inventory management, stock control, and adherence to health and safety standards.
- Knowledge of social media platforms with experience in developing and managing content to promote the café’s brand, menu items, and events.
- Experience in preparing a variety of beverages and food items, understanding café standards, and updating menus as needed.
- Knowledge of health, safety, and sanitation regulations, with the ability to ensure compliance to maintain a safe and clean café setting.
- Hygiene and food safety certificate from MAPAQ or equivalent (an asset).
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and handle a variety of responsibilities.
- Experience in food preparation, including handling, assembling ingredients, and operating espresso machines and other café equipment efficiently.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on maintaining high standards of food quality, cleanliness, and merchandise displays.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and pressures, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Experience in creating and implementing customer engagement strategies that drive repeat business and enhance the overall guest experience.
- Familiarity with café management software and other technology tools beyond POS systems, such as digital inventory systems.
- Skills in team-building activities and creating a collaborative work environment that boosts morale and productivity.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with local businesses or organizations to support café promotions and community involvement.
- Good knowledge of the McGill community and the Student’s Society of McGill University (an asset).
Pay: $17.20 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 per week
