JOB SUMMARY: The Junior Graphic Designer/Illustrator reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Senior Graphic Designer/Illustrator in conjunction with the communications Coordinator.
To assist the Communications Department in the creation of culturally enriched graphic design/illustrated works for communication and information management activities related to Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and its various departments.

- 1-year direct work experience demonstrating capacity in performing the Essential Responsibilities of the position.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Junior Graphic Designer/Illustrator
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Senior Graphic Designer/Illustrator in conjunction with the communications Coordinator.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To assist the Communications Department in the creation of culturally enriched graphic design/illustrated works for communication and information management activities related to Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and its various departments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- External Communications
- Support the design, production and distribution of promotional materials for Six Nations of the Grand Rivers’ various departments.
- Provide graphic design, illustration and photography supports for key events of Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and its various departments.
- Implement the established Six Nations of the Grand River brand standards to promote the organization’s brand identity.
- Promote and protect the reputation of Six Nations Elected Council and the community.
- Assist in the creation of graphic/illustrated learning resource materials for the community and Six Nations of the Grand Rivers’ various departments.
- Assist in the creation of culturally enriched materials that provide exposure to Native Language and contribute to a larger resource library for community members and Six Nations of the Grand River departments.
- Internal Communications
- Assist the Communications Team in content creation for the Six Nations of the Grand River Brand Book.
- Assist the Communications Team in content creation for the Six Nations of the Grand River distribution channels (website, social media, SNGR App, etc.)
- Provide support to the Communications Team with regards to graphic design/illustration requests and departmental initiatives.
- Assist in the creation of content that draws awareness to various Six Nations of the Grand River events, programs, initiatives, campaigns, etc.
- Social Media
- Support the design and development of materials to be entered onto the Six Nations of the Grand River website.
- Assist in the creation of content to be added to the Six Nations of the Grand River website or social media accounts.
- Other Functions
- Assist with special projects as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Communications Coordinator and Communications Director.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work requires a high degree of interaction with the Communications Coordinator and the Graphic Designer/Illustrator. Subject to mental stress, unscheduled hours, deadlines, some stressful situations and interruptions, need to prioritize tasks, maintain composure in demanding situations, and maintain confidentiality. Overtime and some travel may be required.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
With the Communications Director
Receives direction, instructions, supervision and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.
With the Communications Coordinator:
Receives direction, instructions, and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.
With the Senior Graphic Designer/Illustrator:
Receives direction, instructions, supervision, and interacts to assist in the completion of tasks/project, as well is the Junior Graphic Designer/Illustrator’s direct supervisor.
With Staff Members:
Works cooperatively and courteously with all staff; is a team player; provides graphic design and illustration assistance.
With External Agencies/Organizations and Businesses:
Promotes Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council in a positive and qualified manner; interacts cooperatively and courteously.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Education and Experience:
- University degree or college diploma from a recognized educational institution in graphic design, illustration, digital media creation; OR
- 1-year direct work experience demonstrating capacity in performing the Essential Responsibilities of the position.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:
- Above average graphic design and illustration skills.
- Above average creative writing skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively set priorities and multi-task.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of computer applications including, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Must be trustworthy, reliable and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders.
- Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
- Speaking and writing skills in any of the Haudenosaunee language(s) is an asset.
IMPACT OF ERROR:
Error in judgement and conduct of duties may lead to lost credibility, poor public relations and misinformation being provided. Errors could result in embarrassment to the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and Administration, loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust.
CONTROL:
- Guiding principles set by the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and the Chief Executive Officer.
- Must work within the Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council for its Administration.
- Must work within the internal Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River Communications Department.
