Position: Research Engineer – Code Generation & Model Evaluation
Type: Contractor
Compensation: $50–$100/hour

About the Opportunity micro1 is engaging experienced Research Engineers to contribute to a customer project focused on code generation, software engineering, and AI model evaluation. You will apply your programming and technical problem-solving expertise to help train next-generation AI systems using high-quality, real-world coding input.
The work involves analyzing and debugging diverse codebases, implementing software features, improving code performance, developing realistic coding tasks, and evaluating AI-generated solutions. No prior AI experience is required—your software engineering expertise, algorithmic knowledge, and ability to evaluate technical solutions are what matter.
Responsibilities
- Analyze, debug, and resolve complex issues across codebases written in Python 3, Java, Rust, C++, Go, and TypeScript.
- Design, implement, and refine new features and enhancements for code-generation workflows.
- Refactor existing codebases to improve performance, maintainability, scalability, and adaptability.
- Optimize software implementations using appropriate algorithms and data structures.
- Develop realistic coding tasks designed to evaluate AI model performance and accuracy.
- Review AI-generated code and assess correctness, completeness, efficiency, and consistency.
- Author explicit, actionable feedback and annotations to support model training and technical assessment.
- Identify bugs, incorrect assumptions, inefficient implementations, and edge-case failures.
- Collaborate with open-source contributors and technical stakeholders to establish technical direction and maintain robust outputs.
- Document technical decisions, best practices, implementation approaches, and solutions.
- Maintain high standards of code quality, validation, and output consistency.
Required Qualifications
- Strong expertise in competitive programming and coding problem analysis.
- Expertise in at least one of Python 3,
Java, Rust, C++, Go, or TypeScript.
- Solid understanding of algorithms and data structures.
- Proven track record of open-source contributions or participation in collaborative software projects.
- Strong analytical ability to interpret complex problem constraints and evaluate multiple solution pathways.
- Experience debugging, validating, and optimizing software implementations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
- Meticulous attention to detail when reviewing code and evaluating technical outputs.
- Ability to work independently in a remote and collaborative environment.
- Commitment to producing high-quality, well-documented code under tight project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive experience solving complex algorithmic and competitive-programming problems.
- Experience working across multiple programming languages and software ecosystems.
- Strong background in open-source software development and collaborative engineering workflows.
- Experience with code generation, automated code evaluation, or software benchmarking.
- Experience designing coding challenges, technical assessments, or software-engineering evaluation tasks.
- Experience reviewing AI-generated code or technical solutions.
- Strong understanding of performance optimization, code refactoring, and maintainable software architecture.
- Experience producing structured technical feedback, annotations, or evaluation criteria.
- Ability to identify subtle correctness issues, edge cases, and alternative solution approaches.

Compensation
