Position Summary
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller supports the financial reporting and accounting operations of the group across multiple legal entities. The role is responsible for timely and accurate financial reporting, month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, internal controls, audit readiness, budgeting and analysis, compliance, and team leadership. The Assistant Controller also acts as a finance business partner and supports ERP implementation and continuous process improvement.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and support the month-end and year-end close process and the preparation of timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with ASPE.
- Review balance sheet reconciliations, supporting schedules, intercompany balances and other close documentation, ensuring issues are investigated and resolved on a timely basis.
- Prepare and review value-added variance analysis, operating metrics and management reporting to support business decisions.
- Coordinate audit readiness, including preparation and review of supporting schedules, reconciliations and documentation required for the annual audit.
- Provide day-to-day leadership, review, coaching and mentorship to members of the financial reporting team, including employees pursuing their CPA designation.
- Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process and provide monthly actual-to-budget analysis.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures and finance best practices; identify and implement process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with government reporting requirements, tax filings, banking requirements and financial covenant reporting, as applicable.
- Act as a finance business partner to operational leaders and provide financial insight, analysis and support across the organization.
- Support ERP implementation, data integrity, testing, process standardization and the transition of finance activities to new systems.
- Participate in special projects and other finance initiatives as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration is required.
- CPA designation is required.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for month-end and year-end close; multi-entity experience is strongly preferred.
- Robust knowledge of ASPE and experience preparing and reviewing financial statements, reconciliations and variance analysis.
- Experience working with multiple legal entities, intercompany transactions and complex organizational structures.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to coach, develop and provide direction to accounting staff.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with finance and operational stakeholders.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
- Strong ERP/accounting systems experience is required; experience with Sage 300, NetSuite and/or an ERP implementation or migration is an asset.
- Experience in retail, distribution or a multi-location operating environment is an asset.
Pay: $90,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
