We're hiring a fractional AWS Data Architect to support a regulated biotech data platform engagement. This is an advisory-plus-hands-on role — not a full build — focused on getting foundational architecture decisions right before the broader build begins.

Contract/Subcontract | Calgary, AB (local preferred)

What you'll own:

- Foundational AWS account architecture — account structure, dev/QA/production environment separation strategy
- Data lake governance — Lake Formation design, tag-based access control model
- Encryption strategy — KMS key hierarchy, rotation policy, access boundaries
- Building or directly configuring the highest-stakes foundational infrastructure pieces
- Reviewing AI-generated infrastructure code (Terraform) for soundness on lower-risk work

Must-haves:

- Deep, hands-on AWS architecture experience — account structure design, IAM/Identity federation, networking, encryption/KMS, data lake/governance services (Lake Formation, Glue Catalog or equivalent)
- Comfortable both designing and personally building foundational infrastructure — this is not a review-only role




- Working proficiency with Terraform sufficient to write and troubleshoot configurations directly
- Demonstrated experience architecting systems for regulated or high-compliance environments (healthcare, life sciences, finance, or similar)
- Robust grasp of security fundamentals — blast-radius containment, least-privilege access design, encryption key lifecycle management
- AWS certification(s) at the architect level

Nice-to-haves:

- Direct experience with GxP computing environments, FDA/EMA regulatory data requirements, or 21 CFR Part 11 considerations
- Experience with clinical trial or genomics/bioinformatics data platforms
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows
- Experience with AWS Organizations / multi-account governance models
- 10+ years in cloud architecture, with meaningful depth in regulated-industry environments. Engagement structure: concentrated involvement for the first 1-2 weeks (~15-20 hrs/week), tapering to advisory/on-call review as the platform stabilizes.
