Role: BCCA Steering Committee Member

Status: Temporary, Part-Time - one year contract

Commitment: 4-6 meetings per year (12-14 hours), ad hoc advisory support

Who we are The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based organization, formed in 2019 and registered as a non-profit in 2020, dedicated to addressing the structural inequities created by racism, especially anti-Black racism, within education settings in British Columbia. The organization was born out of a crisis in our community, following a racist bomb threat at a Vancouver high school, Lord Byng Secondary, and recognizing the broad harm that occurred not only to Black students in the school but also felt within the broader community, especially other Black community members.

Although the 'Lord Byng incident' was a foundational moment in the formation of the BC Community Alliance, we are more accurately understood as a response to the racism that is felt by many racialized students.

Who we’re looking for

BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is seeking strategic, future-minded, and passionate individuals to join our Steering Committee. This role will be instrumental in guiding the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of BCCA. As a Board Member on the Steering Committee, you will work collaboratively with other members to ensure the mission and vision of the organization are achieved while consistently pushing our mission and vision forward.

The ideal candidate for the role will possess excellent advisory, relationships, and communication skills and a passion for social service initiatives and facilitating positive change within the community. We are looking for someone who is energetic, has a passion for building rapport and connections, and who loves driving business goals forward. First impressions are a very important factor of our business, and therefore, your demeanour, knowledge, and helpfulness are extremely influential when representing the BCCA brand.





We are looking for the successful candidates to have part-time availability for one year, with the possibility of extension for up to four years. Board members will be expected to attend 4-6 meetings per year and will be on probation for an initial 3 months of the term.

What you’ll do

- Have a explicit understanding of BCCA’s mission, policies, programs and needs, as well as its collective purpose
- Complete necessary preparation in advance of company board meetings, and review of board materials
- Prepare for, attend, and participate in Steering Committee meetings, providing insights and expertise to inform decision-making
- Collaborate with fellow board members to develop and review strategic plans and policies
- Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization within the community
- Monitor and evaluate the organization’s progress toward its goals and objectives
- Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission
- Leverage connections, networks, partnerships and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission
- Represent the organization at public events and within the community to promote its mission and initiatives
- Assist in fundraising efforts and resource development to support the organization’s programs
- Fully engaged in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve
- Uphold the legal duties, responsibilities and laws regarding non-profit governance
- Other duties as assigned

What you bring

- Formal education in a relevant field (such as nonprofit management, law, research communications, public administration,



social sciences, or a related discipline)
- Previous experience in a board or leadership role, preferably in a nonprofit or similar organization
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse groups
- Proven ability to think strategically and critically, with a focus on results
- Knowledge of federal funding and/or public health agency processes, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)
- Commitment to the mission and values of BCCA
