Position Title: GOAPRDJP00001016 - Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, T6H 5T6 (Remote)

Mode: Contract

Client: Government of Alberta

Position Overview A successful candidate will support the Data Centre of Excellence in designing and developing analytical data products and services that enable the Government of Alberta to effectively leverage its data assets and advance the implementation of the GoA Data Strategy.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Business Intelligence Analyst will contribute to data analysis, data modelling, statistical analysis, data visualization, data governance, data quality, business analysis, and the design and delivery of data products.

The role requires an individual who can translate complex and diverse datasets into meaningful, actionable insights that support strategic decision-making, operational planning, policy development, and executive reporting.

Key Responsibilities The Business Intelligence Analyst will provide hands-on business intelligence support for strategic data initiatives and will be responsible for:

- Designing, developing, optimizing, and maintaining advanced Power BI solutions, including dashboards, reports, KPIs, and analytical products.
- Transforming complex and regulated datasets into actionable business insights for policy, operational, and executive decision-making.
- Developing data products using data from multiple sources and across various business domains.
- Analyzing large and complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, relationships, and business opportunities.
- Performing statistical analysis, data mining, trend analysis, predictive analytics, and forecasting using Power BI and Azure analytics tools.
- Gathering, analyzing, validating, and documenting business and technical requirements for analytical projects.
- Translating business requirements into effective analytical solutions and end-to-end BI products.
- Designing and developing data models to support analytical reporting and visualization requirements.




- Developing sophisticated Power BI visualizations using a comprehensive range of visualization techniques to effectively communicate insights and support data storytelling.
- Developing complex DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) measures, calculated columns, and advanced time-intelligence calculations in Power BI.
- Performing data transformations, querying, and analytical processing using SQL in large-scale data environments.
- Combining and integrating raw data from multiple data sources and across organizational domains.
- Developing baseline and ongoing outcomes, key results, metrics, KPIs, and other performance indicators.
- Integrating quantitative and qualitative information to develop comprehensive business insights.
- Capturing and documenting business and technical metadata associated with data products.
- Conducting data quality audits, reviews, validation, and analysis to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical outputs.
- Developing, documenting, and sharing analytical data models and data products.
- Preparing and delivering presentations and data storytelling sessions for executives, business users, and other stakeholders.
- Explaining complex data concepts and analytical findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Applying analytical expertise to support evidence-based decision-making and strategic business planning.
- Identifying, escalating, and communicating project issues, risks, dependencies, and data-quality concerns as appropriate.
- Working effectively within a multidisciplinary, multi-vendor, and multi-stakeholder setting.
- Adapting analytical services and deliverables in response to evolving business requirements, user needs, and emerging technical opportunities.

Mandatory Qualifications





Education

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Required Professional Experience

- 5+ years of direct hands-on experience designing, developing, and optimizing advanced Power BI solutions that transform regulated and complex datasets into actionable insights for policy, operations, and executive reporting.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience utilizing a comprehensive range of Power BI visualization techniques and features, demonstrating both technical expertise and data storytelling capabilities.
- 5+ years of experience analyzing large and complex datasets to conduct trend analysis, predictive analytics, and forecasting using Power BI and Azure analytics tools.
- 5+ years of experience presenting and storytelling with data to effectively communicate data-driven insights to executives and business users within a government organization.
- 5+ years of experience understanding, gathering, analyzing, and developing requirements for analytical projects.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

- 5+ years of experience translating business requirements into analytical solutions and communicating findings effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders while delivering end-to-end BI solutions.
- 5+ years of experience combining and integrating raw data from a variety of data sources and across multiple business domains.
- 5+ years of experience working directly with clients and explaining complex data principles in a clear, thoughtful, and understandable manner.
- 5+ years of experience developing complex DAX measures, calculated columns, and advanced time intelligence in Power BI.
- 3+ years of direct hands-on experience using SQL for data transformation, querying, and analytical processing within large-scale environments.
- 5+ years of experience preparing analytical models, dashboards, and data visualizations.
- 3+ years of experience working with large-scale government datasets
