Introduction The Student Support Worker primarily works with Mi'kmaw /Indigenous students to support a positive school experience, and improve academic success and self-esteem.

The Student Support

Worker works in a collaborative environment with education stakeholders and develops effective communication links between Mi'kmaw /Indigenous learners, their families, the Community and the school.

The Student Support

Worker acts as a positive role model and fosters a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity with Mi'kmaw /Indigenous Nova Scotian students.

Schedule to be determined between Location.

Minimum Requirements - Post-secondary education in Human Services, Social Services or related field

- An equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered in lieu of a diploma/degree program
- Experience working with youth of Mi'kmaw/Indigenous decent
- Being a person of Mi'kmaw/Indigenous descent
- A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and or access to an insured vehicle





Additional Assets - Experience with case management and/or record keeping
- Fluency, knowledge and/or understanding to speak, read and write the Mi'kmaw language
- Authentic connections to Mi'kmaw culture and traditions
- Authentic connections to the Mi'kmaw community
- Ability to connect and build relationships with students
- Knowledge of the current and historic experiences of Mi'kmaw /Indigenous communities in the public education system
- Knowledge of the issues and concerns facing Mi'kmaw /Indigenous youth
- Knowledge of the services available to Mi'kmaw /Indigenous learners
- Ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cultural competence, human rights and diversity
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning
- Ability to work as a cooperative team member
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including: students, parents, school staff, community members and external groups
- Ability to utilize current technologies
- Ability to maintain accurate records and write reports
- Ability to apply effective problem-solving and alternate dispute resolution strategies
- The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality
