Houston Link to Learning is looking for an Early Years Resource Worker/Family Literacy Coordinator as per the attached.

Qualifications and Qualities required

- Working towards (or willing to work towards) a diploma/certificate in Early Childhood Education, child and youth care, social work or Family Resource work would be an asset.
- Experience working with children and families would be an asset.
- Literacy experience or training would be an asset.
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization, coordination, research, and time management skills.
- Ability to be versatile and adapt to different situations and changing tasks in order to meet client and program needs.
- Genuine interest in working with children and families.
- Good knowledge of the community and the services available.
- Able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft office and social media.
- Ability to work creatively, problem solve and collaborate with team members and partners.
- Experience working with people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Must have completed Grade 12
- Valid driver’s license and have own transportation available.

Position term: 32 hrs per week, subject to funding.

As soon as possible to Mar 31, 2027. subject to probationary period.

The intent is that this position is permanent, however it is subject to funding.

Salary

Commensurate with experience

Starting at $25.00 per hour

Early Years Resource Worker/Family Literacy Coordinator The Early Years Resource Worker is responsible for the coordination of Early Years Resource program and services in Houston. The Family Literacy Coordinator organizes all aspects of the Family Literacy program and events. This position reports to the Executive Director and/or the Program Manager.

Description of Duties

1. Programming and Services:

a. Coordinate and operate a ‘Family Drop in’ twice a week at the Early Years Resource Centre September to June and at the Garden and Farmers Market in July and August. b. Be available for Family Resource services for 15 hours per week.

c. Be familiar with other community services, contact person and the referral process.

d. Work effectively with children, families, other team members and community members.

e. Guide parents on the process of child development and model appropriate strategies for child behaviors.

f. Assist families in developing and sustaining formal and informal support networks, including peer support relationships.

g. Address, with families, a wide range of challenges including child development, economic stress, separation and divorce, family violence, mental health issues and adaptation to a new country.

h. Design a space that is barrier free, safe, welcoming and facilitates inclusion.

i. Ability to work respectfully, knowledgeably, and effectively with indigenous families.

j. Coordinates parenting programming in collaboration with other HLL programming.

Coordinates family literacy events and workshops including Stories with Santa, Family Literacy Brunch, Teddy Bear Picnic and others.

l. Continuously manage and promote the Imagination Library program.

m. Coordinates regular programming and BBQs at the Community Garden.

1. Community and Public Relations

a. Foster community partnerships and assist with referrals and access to other services. b. Participates in community committees and other programs to promote awareness of the Early Years/Family Literacy.

c. Promotes programs and services within community, including regular newspaper articles to the Houston Today, event information to local radio and social media.

d. Solicits referrals from community organizations and agencies.

1. General

a. Adherence to professional standards of practice and professional and organizational ethics. b. Ability to apply reflective practice to work.

c. Maintains a statistics sheet for every day.

d. Maintains statistics for contact and phone calls for the program.

e. Conducts entrance and exit interviews with all Drop-in participants.

f. Maintains a daily descriptive journal of all activities.

g. Responsible for monitoring the budget and understanding the contracts that fund this position.

h. Responsible for monthly reporting as per the contract.

i. Attends job related in services, workshops and meeting as required including monthly staff meetings j. Conducts program evaluation.

k. Is responsible for making sure the program stays within budget.

l. Vacation coverage.

m. Other tasks as required or as assigned by the Manager.
