Engineering Team Lead – Control & Automation Design

What you'll do The Protection & Control Engineering Division provides engineering expertise for BC Hydro's protection, control,

automation, SCADA, and operational technology systems that support the safe, reliable, and secure operation of the provincial power system. The division serves as the technical authority for these disciplines and supports the full asset lifecycle, including planning, design, construction, commissioning, sustainment, regulatory compliance, and cybersecurity stewardship.

The Protection & Control Engineering Division has an exciting opportunity for a Team Lead, Industrial Control Systems

(ICS) Design based at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. Reporting to the P&C; Design Department Manager, you will lead a team of engineers, technologists and contractors responsible for the design, sustainment, and modernization of transmission station industrial control systems (ICS), automation systems, and operational technology (OT) infrastructure.

You will lead the delivery of engineering solutions for BC Hydro's capital and maintenance programs while advancing engineering quality, professional practice, cybersecurity, compliance, and continuous improvement. This role offers the chance to develop technical talent, shape engineering practices, and support critical infrastructure that enables the safe,

reliable, and secure operation of BC Hydro's electric system.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, develop, and mentor a high-performing team through coaching, performance management, succession planning,





and professional development.
- Provide strategic direction, resource planning, and technical oversight to support the successful delivery of capital and

maintenance programs.
- Ensure engineering work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with quality, schedule, regulatory, and

professional practice requirements.
- Provide leadership for transmission station control, automation, ICS, and OT engineering practices, standards, asset

stewardship, cybersecurity, and long-term technology planning.
- Champion professional practice and quality management by ensuring compliance with EGBC requirements, BC Hydro

standards, NERC CIP obligations, and industry best practices.
- Build effective partnerships across Engineering, Operations, Integrated Planning, Project Delivery, and external service

providers to achieve business objectives.
- Represent the department through technical leadership, industry engagement, and participation in professional forums,

working groups, and conferences.

What you bring

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university. Preference may be given to candidates with

specialization in control systems, automation, communications, or a related discipline.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists

BC (EGBC).
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in the design, implementation, operation, or lifecycle management of utility

industrial control systems, operational technology networks, automation systems, or comparable critical infrastructure environments. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience leading technical teams, programs, projects, or multidisciplinary engineering initiatives in a complex

environment. Previous people leadership experience is an asset.
- Proven ability to manage resources, technical risk, quality, schedules, and delivery outcomes while balancing business,

operational, regulatory, and professional practice requirements.
- Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder engagement, and change management skills, with the ability to build trust,

develop talent, and influence outcomes.
- Strong analytical, decision-making,



and problem-solving abilities with demonstrated success resolving complex technical

and organizational challenges.
- Extensive knowledge of utility industrial control systems (ICS), operational technology (OT) networks, transmission station

automation systems, and related communication technologies.
- Experience applying cybersecurity principles and designing secure OT architectures within critical infrastructure

environments.
- Knowledge of utility, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure standards and frameworks, including IEC 61850, IEC 62443,

IEC 62351, IEEE 1686, NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-82, and applicable regulatory requirements affecting bulk electric system operational technology environments. What we offer

- This is a hybrid position based at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC, with a minimum in-office requirement of

three days per week.
- Occasional travel throughout British Columbia is required. A valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence in good standing is a

condition of employment.
