Department Summary The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region.

The University of Denver Libraries are central to discovery and creative interaction among students and faculty, and provide collections, services, personnel, and systems that support the teaching and research programs of the University. Position Summary

This is a temporary (Fall Quarter only) non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

The Exhibits Assistant supports all aspects of exhibit development at the University of Denver Libraries, working closely with the Exhibits Librarian in a small, collaborative department. This student position is ideal for someone who thrives in a creative, hands-on environment, values organization, and enjoys contributing to visual storytelling and educational outreach.

The Exhibits team is integrated across University Libraries, collaborating with departments such as Special Collections & Archives, Reference & Instruction, and Technical Services. We produce approximately 16 exhibits annually - ranging from large-scale, multi-case installations to small pop-up displays and digital exhibits hosted on our custom-built online platform.

The Exhibits

Assistant will contribute to all phases of exhibition work, from research and planning to design, installation, and event support.

Essential Functions

- Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and community members to develop engaging exhibits
- Support the creation of exhibit content that aligns with educational and institutional goals
- Assist with exhibit planning, including drafting layout diagrams and preparing materials
- Print, trim, and mount exhibit panels and labels with care and attention to design standards
- Participate in the installation and de-installation of exhibits, using safe handling practices and tools as needed
- Contribute to the creation and upkeep of digital exhibits using the Libraries’ online platform
- Track object locations and conditions, and assist with loan documentation
- Help plan and support exhibit-related events, including preparing signage and promotional materials and assisting with event setup and logistics
- Complete assigned projects independently and contribute to the daily operations of the exhibits department

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities





- Basic understanding of exhibit design and visual storytelling
- Familiarity with secure object handling and collections care
- Experience with or willingness to learn design software such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
- Strong attention to detail in preparing printed materials and labels
- Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
- Comfort using basic hand and power tools (e.g., scissors, drills, levels)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Adaptability in a dynamic, project-based environment
- Creativity, organization, and enthusiasm for learning

Required Qualifications

- Some education or experience in a related field, such as library and information science, museum studies, art and art history, anthropology, history, collections management, design, communications, or another discipline with relevance to this work.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
- Prior experience with exhibit work, including object handling or installation
- Basic construction or craft skills (e.g., matting, framing, mounting, drilling)
- Knowledge of visual design principles (e.g., layout, color, typography)
- Experience supporting events or public programming
- Familiarity with digital content creation or web platforms
- Previous work or internship experience in a library, archive, museum, or gallery

Working Environment

- Open-office environment.
- Unexpected interruptions often occur, and stress level is moderate to high.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs, including exhibit cases, glass shelves, and carts of materials.
- Must be comfortable standing for 1–2 hours and engaging in hands-on tasks that may involve stretching, lifting, or bending.

Supervision & Training The Exhibits Assistant shares a workspace with the Exhibits Librarian, fostering hands-on learning and real-time collaboration. Training is provided throughout each project as needed, and responsibilities are tailored to support both departmental needs and the student’s professional development. As a core team member in a high-impact department, the Exhibits Assistant will gain practical experience in exhibit development, public scholarship, and graphic design.

Hourly Rate:

The hourly rate for the position is $19.82.





The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
