Columbia Wireless is looking for a dependable, personable and mechanically inclined individual to join our team as a full-time Field Technician.
This is not a desk job. One day may involve installing or repairing an Internet connection at a customer’s home, while another may include travelling by helicopter to a remote mountaintop communications site. It is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving practical problems and learning new technology.
Previous telecommunications experience is an asset, but it is not required. We are willing to train the right person.
What You Will Do
- Install, activate and service wireless and fiber Internet connections at customers’ homes and other client locations.
- Troubleshoot connectivity, cabling, power, wireless equipment and customer networking issues.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers while working in and around their homes.
- Accurately document completed work, equipment changes and service issues.
- Travel by vehicle or helicopter to remote communications sites throughout the West Kootenays.
- Assist tower and technical crews at mountaintop sites.
- Help inspect and support off-grid mountain top communication tower systems, including solar, wind and backup-generator equipment.
- Provide trained ground support during helicopter operations, including remote-site equipment and propane-cylinder changes.
- Participate in tower-climbing work if interested, trained and qualified. Most of our towers are less than 60 feet tall.
What We Are Looking For
- Excellent people skills and a professional, respectful manner with customers.
- A reliable, safety-conscious and self-motivated approach to work.
- Strong practical problem-solving ability and a willingness to learn.
- Comfort working outdoors in changing weather and on uneven or remote terrain.
- Comfort travelling in helicopters to remote mountain top locations.
- Basic mechanical, electrical, computer or networking aptitude.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A valid driver’s licence and the legal ability to work in Canada.
Post-secondary education, trade training or other technical education is preferred because this position requires the ability to learn several different systems. However, a specific diploma or degree is not required if you can demonstrate robust aptitude, reliability and a willingness to learn.
Experience with telecommunications, wireless networking, low-voltage wiring, construction, customer service, outdoor work or tower sites would be considered an asset.
Training and Career Development
Technical training can be provided on the job. Additional tower-climbing and safety training is also available to employees who are interested and suited to that work.
We value versatility and compensate accordingly. The more relevant skills you bring—and the more work you can safely and independently perform—the more we are prepared to pay.
Compensation: $30 to $50 per hour, ($62,400 to $104,000 Salary) based on relevant experience, technical ability and demonstrated capabilities. Once the individual is fully trained and has gained enough experience, there is a higher level admin team they can move up into with even higher pay!
How to Apply
Please apply with your résumé and a brief introduction explaining why you believe you would be a good fit for this position. We encourage capable applicants to apply even if they do not already have direct wireless, telecommunications or helicopter ground support experience.
Pay: $30.00-$50.00 per hour
Expected hours: 35.0 – 45.0 per week
Work Location: On the road
