The whole function, in one pair of hands.
This is not a seat in an accounting department. It is the accounting department. Accounts payable, billings, semi-monthly payroll, every bank and trust reconciliation, month-end close, the internal financial statements, the budget, the cash flow reporting, GST, the year-end package that goes to our external accountant — all of it is yours.
If you are the kind of accountant who is happiest when the whole cycle is in your own hands and the books are clean because you made them clean, keep readingTips: Provide a summary of the role, what success in the position looks like, and how this role fits into the organization overall.
About Faber
Faber Inc. is an Alberta firm of Licensed Insolvency Trustees. Since 1997 we have grown from a single Edmonton office to offices across the province, helping people and businesses resolve debt through bankruptcy, proposals and corporate restructuring. We are regulated by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
Our Internal Accountant is retiring at the end of December after many years with the firm. He has written a full procedure manual for his successor, and he will be here to hand the role over properly — a handover most accountants moving into a sole-charge position never get.
What you'll do
- Run the full accounting cycle for the firm in QuickBooks Online — payables, billings, accruals, journal entries, month-end close
- Administer trust accounting for every insolvency engagement in Aryza Insolv, our Insolvency Process System: receipts, disbursements, deposits, monthly interest, cheques and reconciliations
- Reconcile all corporate bank accounts, including the Skilled account through which Trustee fees and advances flow
- Prepare semi-monthly payroll, payroll reports, source deductions, entitlements and T4s
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual internal financial statements, budgets, forecasts and variance reporting
- Prepare weekly and monthly cash flow and cost management reporting,
reviewed directly with the President & CEO
- Reconcile work in progress from Faber Time, our Salesforce-based WIP system
- Prepare and file quarterly GST returns
- Prepare the internal year-end package for our external accountant, who handles the external statements and the corporate tax return
- Supervise and review the work of our Junior Accountant — a new position reporting to you
- Hold signing authority on disbursements, alongside the President & CEO The trust accounting piece — and why it matters A substantial part of this role involves money that is not ours. Funds held for insolvent debtors and their creditors are governed by federal statute and administered to a higher standard of care than the firm's own money. It is meticulous, structured work with real consequences for getting it wrong. You do not need insolvency experience to do it — we will teach you the system and the rules — but you do need to be the kind of accountant who reconciles rather than estimates, and who raises a difference instead of carrying it forward.
What you bring
- A business degree or diploma in accounting, or equivalent experience
- Five to ten years of full cycle accounting experience, where you owned the whole cycle
- Working knowledge of QuickBooks Online, including payroll
- Strong Excel — schedules and reconciliations built to be checked and repeated
- Meticulous accuracy and the patience to find the last dollar
- Discretion: you will see every salary in the firm and every dollar in trust
- The ability to work with limited supervision and hold deadlines that do not move
• Eligibility to be bonded and a satisfactory criminal record check A word about the CPA question
We are not asking for a designation and it is not a screening criterion. What we need is someone experienced, mature and genuinely interested in full cycle accounting who wants to settle into a role and stay. If you have a CPA and this is the work you want to do, you are welcome to apply — but nobody here is going to be more impressed by the letters than by a clean set of books and a month-end that closes on time.
