Your Opportunity

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. 3G3 is an 18+ bed unit providing care to Orthopedic, Spine and General Surgery patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. As a LPN, you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and families.

The LPN provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards. Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in the patients physical, mental, and emotional state, assists the patient with activities of daily living and provides the patient and family with relevant information and teaching. The LPN is responsible to collaborate as a member of the health care team, delivering consistent quality care, to meet the needs of the patient.

in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

organization, email address, phone number. Typed copy only.) Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation.

Medication

Calculation exams is provided during the surgery orientation days or scheduled by the CNE. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. Excellent communication skills, a compassionate and caring attitude, and attention to detail are necessary. Strong interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills are needed. Preference given to candidates with greater than 1 year of recent Ortho/Spine Surgery experience and candidates with previous tracheostomy care and charge experience. The LPN must be able to work in a rapid paced, physically demanding environment, including standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling greater 25-50lbs, as well as reaching for patients who range from low to high BMI. Must not have any current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to communicate findings concisely, accurately, in both written and verbal form, deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs and workload assignment, while dealing with frequent interruptions. Demonstrated initiative, reliability, flexibility and critical thinking. Maintain collaborative working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment. Strong patient teaching skills.
