The Pharmacy

Technician practices to full scope, supporting all aspects of drug distribution to ensure effective daily operations and safe, high quality patient care.

Responsibilities include order entry; preparation, repackaging, and final product verification of both sterile and non sterile products; and distribution for individual patient prescriptions and ward stock. The role also involves supporting staff and student training and orientation, participating in special projects and programs, maintaining departmental records and statistics, and preparing reports as required.

The Pharmacy

Technician builds collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including communicating with nursing staff to clarify medication orders and requests, triaging drug information inquiries, and resolving distribution issues. A high standard of performance is maintained through completion of internal validation programs that assess proficiency in key competencies such as aseptic technique, computerized order entry, and final product checking.

Description

As a Pharmacy Technician I, you will be responsible for the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products. You will receive and triage medication orders, compound and repackage medication and prepare sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products.

Required Qualifications

Completion of a CCAPP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Current, provisional, or transferable registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as a Pharmacy Technician.

Additional Required Qualifications

Minimum two years of direct oncology practice experience, including sterile compounding, is required. Candidates must be currently practicing in oncology and be an authorized chemotherapy checker, with Connect Care oncology experience essential. Prior hospital experience is required, including a broad range of responsibilities such as order entry, final product checking, sterile compounding, and all aspects of drug distribution (e.g., ward stock, narcotics, and individual patient prescriptions). Demonstrated experience across all areas of oncology pharmacy practice is expected, including IV order entry, setup, preparation, and medication distribution.

Experience with validation programs assessing proficiency in key competencies—such as aseptic technique, computerized order entry, and final product checking—is required. To ensure your skills and qualifications are considered, please attach a resume and cover letter with your application.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience in a retail Pharmacy setting. Membership in CAPhO. Membership with a Pharmacy professional organization.
