Posting Summary: The Town of Truro is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Mechanic to join the Public Works Department. This unionized role supports the reliable operation of municipal vehicles and equipment through servicing, preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs. The ideal candidate will hold a valid Red Seal Mechanic licence, bring at least three years of related experience, and be comfortable working in a physically active shop environment.
The Town offers salary in accordance with the Collective Agreement, along with a competitive benefits and pension package for full-time employees.
Nature of the Position:
The Maintenance and Repair Shop supports the secure and reliable operation of Town of Truro Public Works vehicles and equipment through regular servicing, preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
This position is classified at the Mechanic level, with salary dependent on mechanic licensing and in accordance with the signed Letter of Understanding between CUPE Local 734 and the Town of Truro. The incumbent must be proficient in performing regular and recurring servicing, maintenance, and repairs on vehicles and equipment used by the Town’s Public Works Departments.
Responsibilities include maintaining assigned shop equipment, supporting safe work practices, following applicable policies and procedures, and coordinating work with other departments to help ensure Public Works operational needs are met.
Required Qualifications:
· Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent;
· Valid Red Seal Mechanic licence;
· Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in a related position;
· Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence, with a clean driver’s abstract;
· Working knowledge and experience with the normal operations of a repair shop;
· Knowledge of assigned equipment, materials, tools, and procedures relevant to the work;
· Ability to troubleshoot problems associated with assigned tools and equipment;
· Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team, respond to public inquiries, and provide high-quality customer service;
· Ability to work independently, solve problems, manage competing priorities, and achieve positive results with limited direct supervision;
· Completion of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training and Emergency First Aid.
Assets:
· Truck and Transport Mechanic licence;
· Air brake endorsement;
· Experience with municipal equipment, hydraulics, welding, fabrication, and Motor Vehicle Inspection;
· Experience with record keeping, bookkeeping, material handling, and documentation;
· Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Town’s Occupational Health and Safety Program;
· Basic knowledge of the Transportation and Environmental Services Departments.
Working Conditions and Physical Environment:
Applicants must possess the physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy labour, including frequent bending, walking, kneeling, and lifting for extended periods of time.
The position involves frequent work near mechanical parts and potential exposure to loud noise, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals; appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn when working in these conditions.
