Purchasing Manager - Edmonton Plant
Summary
Responsible for overseeing purchasing activities for the Edmonton Plant and working with the Boucherville and Mississauga purchasing managers to support the Canadian Purchasing Category program. Continuously monitors industry trends to source quality, cost-effective raw materials and finished goods that meet customer, production, food safety, and inventory requirements. Provides leadership and support to the purchasing team while developing and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, internal stakeholders, and corporate purchasing partners.
Essential Functions
- Interacts independently with suppliers and manufacturers, as required, to support sourcing, pricing, service levels, and issue resolution.
- Demonstrates cost effectiveness by staying current on ingredient technologies, market conditions, pricing trends, and alternate supply options.
- Develops additional and alternate sources of supply for existing, new, and improved raw materials to support continuity, quality, cost, and service objectives.
- Participates in continuous improvement activities and cross-functional initiatives that support purchasing, production, quality, food safety, and plant objectives.
- Complies with Newly Weds Foods corporate personnel policies and purchasing procedures.
- Continually monitors new ideas, trends, and innovations that may benefit the company, including ingredient, supplier, process, and market developments.
- Supports Edmonton purchasing requirements and collaborates with Boucherville and Mississauga purchasing teams as needed to align Canadian sourcing, pricing, inventory, and category objectives.
- Provide support and training as required.
- Works with the Canadian purchasing team to standardize purchasing processes, procedures, files, reporting, and communication practices where appropriate.
- Supports inventory control through costing, pricing, usage, and purchasing analytics, including review of raw material exposure, inactive items, and changes that affect plant cost performance.
- Meets with suppliers to negotiate pricing, terms,
supply reliability, freight considerations, and service expectations in order to generate savings and support plant requirements.
- Understands Edmonton Plant purchasing requirements and collaborates with Canadian / North American operations as needed to support Canadian purchasing alignment.
- Manages contract negotiations, terms, pricing validity, and supplier commitments while collaborating with corporate purchasing and other internal stakeholders.
- Understands category separation, supplier allocation, and control planning to support purchasing governance, risk management, and alignment with the Canadian Purchasing Category program.
- Prepares the 12-month accumulative report and submits it to Corporate headquarters monthly.
- Gathers data for the reserve report related to raw materials with no usage, inactive inventory, or other items requiring review.
- Prepares and updates raw material budget costs in the company’s ERP / MRP systems.
- Updates and maintains pricing, CSF, POF, MRP, MRF, and vendor email files to ensure purchase orders reflect current pricing at receipt and that freight, cost, and related receiving information remain current.
- Manages SCARs, returns, and supplier deviations by working with Quality Control to ensure non-compliance details are reported, corrective actions are documented, credits are pursued, and inventory adjustments are followed up.
- Reviews discontinued finished goods reports, checks formulas, identifies unique customer-specific ingredients, reviews raw material forms, updates reorder points, documents raw material concerns, and works to bill the client, write off inventory, or work off inventory as appropriate.
- Manages raw material requests by corresponding with R&D; or RTIS, meeting with vendors, obtaining pricing for new projects, and setting up codes for new raw materials.
- Resolves purchasing-related accounting issues, including incorrect invoices, quantity discrepancies, credits, stock returns, claims, SCAR follow-up, and floor stock review.
- Orders ingredients for trial and offline formulas that do not trigger through the MRP system, including first-time purchases of new ingredients, MOQ review, and carrier arrangements for delivery to the required location.
- Reports to the Plant Manager.
- Manages Purchasing department personnel
Non-Essential Functions:
- Perform other various similar and related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- College or university degree in business, supply chain, procurement, food science, or a related field is preferred; a PMAC or equivalent supply chain designation would be an asset.
- Minimum of 8–10 years of related purchasing, procurement, supply chain experience in the food industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrates purchasing knowledge, judgment, and performance at a level appropriate for a manager responsible for plant purchasing activities.
- Works effectively in a team environment.
- Familiarity with GMPs, HACCP, food safety, and quality systems is an asset.
- Demonstrates strong communication, leadership, organization, analytical, problem-solving, multitasking, and intermediate computer skills.
- Ensures required confidentiality is maintained at all times.
Work Environment:

- Periodic exposure to noise, airborne dust, food production odours, walking and standing on concrete, climbing steps, and standing on elevated surfaces.
- A heavily audited food environment requiring close adherence to compliance, cleanliness and safety.
Pay: From $95,000.00 per year
