Reporting to the Owner and Management staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, managing, and continuously improving the company's Food Safety and Quality systems. This role will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, customer standards, and third-party audit expectations.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical and scientific knowledge of food processing environments, HACCP, SQF, GMP, and applicable food safety regulations. This position requires someone who can work independently, collaborate effectively with production and management teams, and take ownership of food safety and quality initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Continuous improvement in areas regarding Food Safety, Quality, SQF, and HACCP programs – including developing, implementing, and maintaining existing and new
- Investigate deviations, customer complaints, and non-conformances, and develop appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide food safety, GMP, and quality-related training to new and existing employees. Must be able to follow I do, we do, you do training process.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance regarding product quality, food safety, sanitation, and GMP practices.
- Work with government agencies regarding food safety and quality matters as required.
- Prepare for and participate in third-party audits, maintaining professional and collaborative relationships with auditors and production teams.
- Follow up on corrective and preventive actions resulting from audit findings.
- Create, update, and review SOPs, forms, policies, and other documentation related to food safety programs.
- Communicate with management regarding food safety issues, SQF requirements, agendas, and significant program updates.
- Collect samples for laboratory testing and prepare samples to be shipped for out sourced testing.
- Follow up on laboratory results and maintain data trends.
- Validate results, critical limits, CCP checks, allergen limits, and other testing requirements as needed.
- Manage and maintain the supplier approval program in accordance with SQF requirements.
- Complete an annual reassessment of the SQF system.
- Recommend and implement approved improvements to production processes to improve food safety and operational efficiency.
- Participate in QA projects, including new product launches and process improvement initiatives.
- Verify the effectiveness of recall and traceability programs.
- Assist with investigations related to customer complaints.
- Ensure the facility and equipment meet sanitation standards through effective sanitation protocols, recordkeeping, and follow-up.
- Ensure changes to product specifications, programs, and standards are clearly communicated and properly implemented.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and company Health & Safety and GMP policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Co-Presidents.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in the food processing or food manufacturing industry.
- Working knowledge and training in HACCP, SQF, GMP, SFCR, Food Safety, and Quality Management Systems.
- Experience participating in internal and external audits is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of food safety programs, regulatory compliance, sanitation, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Solid analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and improve policies and procedures related to food safety and quality programs.
- Experience with Food / Dairy Export
