ABOUT TERRESTRIAL X

Terrestrial X designs and builds dual-use hardware systems — platforms and equipment with both civil and defence applications — for aerospace, defence, energy, and critical infrastructure. We also contract-manufacture mission-critical parts for the same industries. Additive manufacturing, sheet and tube fabrication, forming, welding, CNC, and powder coating, under one roof in Edmonton. We are not only a job shop running other people’s drawings. We build our own systems, and we build customer hardware. Same floor. Same standard. Parts and systems leave this building that have to work the first time. Quality is not a department off to the side. It is how we stay in business.

THE ROLE

We need a self-directed Quality Control Specialist who lives on the floor, not in an office.

You have a backbone. When a part is out, it is out. You will not get talked off a call because someone is behind schedule. You also will not use quality as a club. You are picky about the work and useful to the people doing it. You explain the why, show the print, show the spec, and help them get it right the next time — then you still do not ship scrap.

You run your own day. Nobody should have to chase you to inspect a first article, close an NCR, or pull a CoC together before the truck shows up.

You get your hands dirty. Calipers, height gauge, weld gauge, coating thickness, first-article, 3D scan when we need it. You will stand at a press brake, a weld booth, a print farm, and a powder line. You are not an office bum.

WHO YOU ARE

- Self-directing. You do not wait to be told what to inspect. You know the traveler, the drawing, and the process, and you get after it.
- Backbone. You will hold a line and take the heat. Operators will not talk you out of a reject. Leadership will not either.
- Picky, but helpful. You catch the stuff other people miss — weld undercut, powder-coat holidays, warp on a formed panel, layer shift on a print, a dimension that “looks close enough.” Then you show the operator why it failed and how to stop doing it. You are not a cop. You are the person who keeps the shop honest and the customer whole.
- Informative. You explain the standard, the drawing, and the why. People leave a conversation with you smarter, not smaller.
- Team player who gets dirty. Steel toes, hearing protection, long stretches on your feet. You work with operators, welders, printers, coaters, and machinists as a teammate. You teach. You do not grandstand. You still work for the part, not for popularity.
- Both kinds of work. Comfortable moving between customer job-shop lots and in-house dual-use system builds without lowering the bar on either.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect and release both customer contract work and Terrestrial X’s own dual-use hardware systems. Assemblies and systems, not just piece parts. Same standard either way.
- Incoming, in-process,



first article, and final inspection across additive, sheet metal, formed parts, weldments, machined features, and powder-coated finishes.
- Read drawings, GD&T;, travelers, work instructions, WPS/PQR, and customer quality clauses without being walked through them.
- Inspect to print with calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pins, threads, radius gauges, surface plates, coating thickness gauges, and 3D scan data when that is the right tool.
- Complete AS9102 first article packages (Forms 1, 2, and 3), ballooned drawings, inspection records, and Certificates of Conformance that would survive a customer or registrar audit.
- Know what “good” looks like in sheet metal (cut quality, bend radii, flatness, hardware, fit-up), forming (angle, springback, hole-to-bend), welding (profile, penetration, distortion, undercut, cleanliness), additive (layer quality, warpage, support scars, dimensional drift, surface), and powder coat (coverage, adhesion, thickness, orange peel, contamination, masking).
- Tag, quarantine, photograph, and write NCRs that are complete, factual, and usable. Own the floor side of MRB. Do not let nonconforming product wander.
- Support CAPA with facts, not opinions. Find the real cause. Confirm the fix actually stayed fixed.
- Keep gauges and inspection tools in calibration. If a tool is overdue, it is out of service. No exceptions.
- Protect traceability: heat lots, build records, travelers, serials, material certs. The digital thread is part of the job.
- Live inside the ISO 9001 / AS9100 system on the floor: procedures, records, internal audits, customer and registrar visits. Use the system. Improve the system. Do not hide behind it.
- Spot process drift early and tell production before it becomes a pile of scrap.
- Keep FOD, housekeeping, and part handling at aerospace standard. Keep inspection points clean and ready.
- Put your hands on parts. Climb on fixtures. Walk the process. This is not a spectator role.

MUST HAVE
- Hands-on QC or inspection experience in a manufacturing shop — not classroom-only, not quality from a cubicle. Aerospace, defence, energy, or similarly unforgiving work preferred.
- Working knowledge of at least most of: sheet metal fabrication, forming, welding, powder coating, and additive manufacturing. You do not need to be a master of all five on day one, but you cannot be blank on them.
- ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 in practice: travelers, NCRs, FAI, calibration, document control. You have lived inside a QMS, not just read the poster.
- Blueprint reading and GD&T.; Competent with standard metrology tools without supervision.
- Experience writing NCRs / nonconformances and following them through.




- Comfortable rejecting work and explaining why without turning it into a fight — and without backing down.
- Eligible to work in Canada and able to work fully in office in Edmonton. Able to meet Controlled Goods / security requirements as required for the work.

STRONG ASSETS
- AS9102 first article experience.
- AS9100 internal auditor or lead auditor training.
- Welding inspection (visual; CWB or CWI a plus).
- Powder coat process knowledge: prep, mil thickness, adhesion, cure, holidays, masking.
- Additive inspection: FDM / high-temp polymers, MJF/SLS, DMLS — dimensional, visual, and process defects.
- Forming / press brake: bend deduction, springback, angle, hole-to-bend.
- CMM, portable arm, or 3D scan inspection.
- Calibration program ownership.
- Understanding of Controlled Goods (CGP), ITAR, and FedRAMP. You do not need to own export control or cloud authorization. You do need to recognize when a drawing, part, process, or data set is controlled and handle it accordingly.
- Quality certifications (CQT, CQI, etc.).

WHO SHOULD NOT APPLY
- Anyone who wants to live in an office and “manage quality” from a laptop.
- Anyone who needs a script for every decision, or a supervisor to tell them what to inspect next.
- Rubber stamps — people who pass parts to stay liked.
- Hall monitors — people who reject parts to feel powerful, or treat operators like the enemy.
- Clock-watchers, title-hunters, and people who need their feelings protected before the part is right.
- Anyone who treats AS9100 as a binder instead of a way of working.

WHO WILL THRIVE
- A picky tradesperson or inspector who actually likes helping the shop get better.
- Someone who can hold a standard and still be the person people come to with a question.
- A self-starter who does not need a babysitter and does not want one.

THE JOB

Full-time. On-site. Shop hours, with overtime when a job or an audit demands it.
