Position Summary The Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Research Laboratory Technician position supporting the research programs of Dr. Jeremy Wulff. The successful candidate will contribute to the day-to-day operation of research laboratories by preparing test samples, performing mechanical tests on treated materials, supporting research activities, and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards.

This is an externally funded position supporting ongoing research activities within the department.

Position Purpose

This specific position will be tied to a recent industrial collaboration in the Wulff Group. Duties will largely focus on treating fabric samples with crosslinkers and testing the mechanical performance of the cured products.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare laboratory materials, reagents, standards, solutions, and samples according to established protocols.
- Maintain laboratory equipment through routine cleaning, calibration, troubleshooting,



and coordination of repairs as required.
- Assist with routine experimental procedures, laboratory testing, and data collection.
- Receive, label, organize, and store research samples, chemicals, and laboratory materials.
- Monitor laboratory inventory and coordinate the ordering of supplies, chemicals, and consumables.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records, documentation, and data files.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, chemical handling requirements, and departmental policies.
- Manage the collection, storage, and disposal of chemical and hazardous waste in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Support researchers, graduate students, and laboratory personnel with general laboratory operations.
- Assist with laboratory organization and preparation for research activities, inspections, and audits as required.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Chemical Technology, Laboratory Science, or a related scientific discipline.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures, practices, and safety standards.
- Experience handling chemicals and operating standard laboratory equipment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.




- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative research environment.
- Proficiency with standard computer applications such as Microsoft Office and electronic record-keeping systems.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with Mechanical Testing Methods
- Previous experience working in an academic, government, or industrial research laboratory.
- Experience supporting chemistry-related research activities.
- Familiarity with instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience with chemical inventory management systems.
- WHMIS training and knowledge of laboratory safety regulations.
- Experience working with hazardous materials and chemical waste management procedures.

Working Conditions

- Work is performed primarily in a chemistry laboratory environment.
- Strict adherence to laboratory safety procedures and protocols is required.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, and movement of laboratory supplies and equipment may be required.

Appointment Information

This position is funded through external contracts and research grants and is offered as a one-year term appointment. The appointment may be renewed annually, subject to satisfactory performance, operational requirements, project needs, and the continued availability of funding.

Pay: $53,202.00-$58,249.00 per year
