SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER – ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP

Calgary, AB | Full time

YOUR NEXT TITLE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE YOUR NEXT TITLE.

You've spent years becoming the person projects rely on. You've led clients. You've solved difficult engineering problems. You've mentored people. You've made decisions when there wasn't an obvious answer. What happens when you take that experience beyond the project and into the Engineering department itself?

ASCENT is looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager / Professional Engineer who is ready for their next step. We're looking for someone who wants more than another project to manage. Someone who wants to grow into a broader engineering leadership role and ultimately have the opportunity to step into the Engineering Manager position.

You don't need to have held the title before. You do need to be ready for what's next.

THE OPPORTUNITY

ASCENT is a Calgary-based EPCM company specializing in conventional and emerging energy projects. Our team is built around technical excellence, accountability, collaboration and a people-first culture.

In this role, you'll bring together senior project leadership, technical engineering expertise, client relationships and people development. Initially, your focus will be on leading complex projects and providing senior technical direction. As you demonstrate your leadership capabilities, you'll progressively take on broader Engineering department responsibilities. The opportunity is designed around a simple progression:

Senior Project Leadership →Engineering Leadership → Engineering Manager

WHAT YOU'LL DO

LEAD PROJECTS

- Lead multidisciplinary EPCM projects from concept through execution and commissioning.
- Serve as a senior point of contact for clients and build strong, long-term relationships.
- Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activities across disciplines.
- Lead technical reviews, design decisions, project deliverables and execution strategies.
- Support project scopes, cost estimates, schedules and proposals.
- Review engineering deliverables and vendor submissions for compliance with project requirements.
- Apply sound engineering practices to solve complex technical and project challenges.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to project teams.
- Help ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the standards expected by our clients.

LEAD PEOPLE

- Mentor engineers, designers and project professionals.
- Provide guidance and technical leadership to developing team members.

- Help establish clear expectations, accountability and technical standards.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, development and retention of engineering talent.
- Help build leadership depth within the Engineering team.
- Encourage collaboration and reduce silos between Engineering, Projects and Operations.
- Support the development of consistent engineering practices and procedures.

HELP BUILD THE ENGINEERING FUNCTION

- Engineering resource planning and workload forecasting.
- Engineering capacity and project staffing decisions.
- Quality assurance and technical governance.
- Regulatory and professional requirements.
- Engineering procedures, standards and best practices.
- Process improvement and organizational scalability.
- Resolution of complex technical or execution issues.
- Business development, proposals and client engagement.
- Strategic discussions around the future of ASCENT's Engineering department.

Over time, these responsibilities can expand as you demonstrate your ability to lead not only projects, but people, processes and an entire engineering function.

THIS ROLE IS FOR YOU IF...

- You may be a Senior Project Manager today.
- You may be a Senior Project Engineer.
- You may be a Lead Engineer who has started taking on management responsibilities.
- You may be a P.Eng. who has always known you want to lead, but haven't been given the opportunity yet.

If any of these sound like you, we want to hear from you.

- You're a P.Eng. with 10+ years of progressive EPC experience.
- You've led large or complex multidisciplinary projects.
- You're comfortable being the person clients and colleagues turn to when they need direction.
- You enjoy developing engineers and helping others become better at what they do.
- You can move comfortably between technical discussions, client meetings and leadership conversations.
- You understand that successful engineering is about more than calculations and drawings — it's about people, decisions, communication and execution.
- You have strong commercial awareness and understand project budgets, schedules, scope and risk.
- You naturally take ownership and accountability.

- You've started thinking beyond “How do I deliver this project?” and toward “How do we build a better Engineering organization?”
- You're interested in eventually leading a department, not simply managing projects.

WHAT YOU BRING

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum or another engineering discipline aligned with ASCENT's core services.
- Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and APEGA registration.
- 10+ years of progressive EPC engineering experience.
- Significant experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Strong technical knowledge of oil & gas facilities and engineering execution.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring, guiding or developing engineers and project professionals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Confidence interacting with clients, senior leadership and technical teams.
- Experience supporting proposals, project scoping and business development is an asset.
- Strong understanding of engineering quality, risk and regulatory requirements.
- The ability to operate independently while also contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Most importantly: You don't need to have been an Engineering Manager before. You need to demonstrate that you're ready to become one.
