Harbourside Engineering Consultants (HEC) is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to provide technical leadership, mentor emerging professionals, and lead complex infrastructure projects from concept through construction. The successful candidate will oversee multidisciplinary teams, collaborate directly with clients, and contribute to award-winning projects across Canada and internationally.

This opportunity is based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Responsibilities

- Lead the analysis and design of heavy civil structures, including bridges, marine structures, ports, wharves, cofferdams, retaining walls, and related infrastructure.
- Lead preliminary design studies, feasibility assessments, option evaluations, and selection of preferred solutions.
- Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Manage multidisciplinary project teams and coordinate with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and professional development support to EITs, junior engineers, and technical staff.
- Oversee structural analysis, finite element modeling, and the application of relevant design standards and best practices.




- Conduct site visits, condition assessments, construction reviews, and participate in project meetings throughout design and construction.
- Develop project schedules, budgets, resource plans, and cost estimates, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Prepare and lead technical proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates for new opportunities.
- Support business development activities, including client relationship management, identifying new opportunities, and promoting HEC's structural engineering services.
- Contribute to strategic planning, quality management initiatives, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
- ·Coordinate and provide direction to structural draftspersons and technical support staff.

Qualifications

- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of employment.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering.
- Minimum of 8-15 years of progressive experience in structural engineering, with significant experience in heavy civil infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience leading the design and delivery of bridge, marine, coastal, transportation, or other heavy civil infrastructure projects.




- Strong technical knowledge of applicable design codes and standards, including CSA S6 (Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code) and related structural design standards.
- Advanced proficiency with structural analysis and finite element modeling software.
- Proven project management experience, including scope, schedule, budget, and resource management.
- Experience reviewing and sealing engineering designs and technical deliverables.
- Robust leadership, mentoring, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in proposal development, client engagement, and business development is considered a strong asset.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel periodically for site visits and project requirements.
