Nature of the Work & Responsibilities
NATURE OF THE WORK:
The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists in assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, and supervision, and evaluation of laboratory work.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lab Preparation and Instructional Support
- Prepare laboratory exercises, materials, reagents, specimens, cultures, and equipment for teaching laboratories.
- Consult with faculty regarding upcoming laboratory activities and assist in developing or implementing new laboratory exercises.
- Set up, test, and dismantle laboratory activities and provide in-lab support as required.
- Maintain preparation manuals, laboratory records, and course support materials, when applicable.
Equipment and Laboratory Maintenance
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, microscopes, and instrumentation.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs with service providers.
- Ensure teaching laboratories, preparation areas, and storage spaces remain organized and operational.
Inventory and Resource Management
- Maintain inventories of chemicals, biological materials, supplies, glassware, and equipment.
- Order, receive, inspect, and organize laboratory supplies and materials.
- Evaluate recent laboratory equipment and supplies in collaboration with faculty and vendors.
Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with laboratory health and safety regulations.
- Inspect and maintain emergency equipment, including first aid kits, eyewash stations, and safety showers.
- Ensure the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemical and biological materials.
Administrative and Other Duties
- Liaise with College departments such as Purchasing, Receiving, and Facilities Management, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Conditions
QUALIFICATIONS:
To have a secondary school diploma (DES) or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.
CONDITIONS:
- Basic skills in Microsoft Excel
- Advanced oral and written English communication skills (testing may be required)
- Basic oral and written French conversation skills (testing may be required)
