As part of the Squamish Nation Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ Rights and Title Department, the Squamish Valley Fish Guardian plays an important role in protecting and monitoring fisheries resources, fish habitat, and harvesting activities throughout the Squamish Valley. This seasonal, field-based position helps uphold Squamish Nation fishing rights, supports environmental stewardship, promotes education and awareness, and contributes to the preservation of traditional fisheries knowledge and practices. Working alongside fellow Fish Guardians and Natural Resources staff, you will patrol local waterways, engage with community members and fishers, document observations, and help ensure the responsible management of fisheries resources for future generations.

What You’ll Do

- Patrol designated waterways including the Squamish, Cheakamus, Cheekeye, and Sta7mes Rivers by foot and 4x4 vehicle.
- Monitor fishing and harvesting activities and support compliance with Squamish Nation Fishing Bylaw 16 and temporary fishing closures where applicable.
- Observe, collect, record, and report fisheries-related observations and incidents.
- Complete daily reports including fish counts, harvest information, and incident reports.
- Maintain regular communication with the Squamish Valley Fisheries Supervisor throughout assigned shifts.
- Promote awareness of Squamish Nation fishing rights, salmon conservation, and habitat protection among Nation Members and the public.
- Serve as a positive ambassador and role model within the Squamish Valley community.




- Assist with maintaining riverbank areas by removing debris and supporting habitat stewardship efforts.
- Liaise with Public Safety Team members and other internal departments when required.
- Support community outreach initiatives, educational activities, and cultural events as needed.
- Ensure vehicles, equipment, and safety gear are maintained and operating effectively.
- Adhere to Squamish Nation health and safety policies and contribute positively to department goals.

What We’re Looking For

- Knowledge of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh traditional teachings, fisheries practices, and responsible fish harvesting methods.
- Knowledge of local salmon species, fish identification, and salmon life cycles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with community members and the general public.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while maintaining professionalism and accountability.
- Demonstrated patience, integrity, sound judgment, and conflict resolution skills.
- Experience fishing in the Squamish Valley is considered an asset.
- Previous experience working within a First Nations setting is considered an asset.
- Environmental monitoring, enforcement, conflict resolution, or Swift Water Rescue training is considered an asset.




- Intermediate computer skills and the ability to accurately complete daily reports.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work in the Squamish Valley on a daily basis and work flexible hours as required.
- Knowledge and understanding of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw history, culture, customs, land, and people is considered an asset.
