Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) - On-Call Contract, On-Call / As-Needed As an On-Call Early Childhood Assistant, you will step into Bloomsbury Academy classrooms on an as-needed basis to cover staff absences, vacations, leaves of absence, and periods of increased enrollment, working under the direction of the Supervisor and reporting to the Director/Supervisor at your assigned location. You will assist in delivering developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that support children's learning and well-being. In partnership with the Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE), you will contribute to a positive and inclusive environment guided by the organization's program statement, the principles of Early Learning for Every Child Today (ELECT), and the requirements of the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA).

This is an on-call position: you will be scheduled on an as-needed basis and must be available to work on-site at any Bloomsbury Academy location with as much advance notice as possible. The hourly rate for this position is $20, based on skills and experience.

As an on-call team member, hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on business needs, with vacation pay paid out in accordance with the Employment Standards Act. Under the direction of the Director/Supervisor Teacher and Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) at your assigned location, support the implementation of developmentally appropriate activities and daily routines for children between 18 months and 6 years of age. Assist in creating and maintaining a physically safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive environment that promotes children's well-being and positive engagement.

Support the RECE in preparing and organizing learning materials, classroom environments, and activity areas to encourage exploration and play. Interact positively with children through play, conversations, and daily routines while encouraging independence, social skills, and self-help abilities. Assist with the supervision of children during indoor and outdoor play, transitions, meals, rest periods, field trips, and other program activities.





Observe and report children's interests, behaviours, and well-being to the RECE, Director, or Site Supervisor as appropriate. Facilitate small group and individual activities under the guidance of the RECE to support children's learning and development. Conduct attendance verification and support child accountability procedures during indoor play, outdoor play, transitions, and community outings.

Support the maintenance of a clean, organized, and compliant childcare environment in accordance with organizational policies and applicable legislation. Follow all requirements outlined in the Ontario Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the organization's policies, procedures, Code of Conduct, Confidentiality, and Conflict of Interest standards. Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities as required.

Early Childhood

Assistant certification, post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Education, Recreation, or a related field is considered an asset. Minimum one year of experience working with children in a licensed childcare, school, camp, recreation, or related setting. Flexibility and availability to work on-call shifts at any Bloomsbury Academy location, often on short notice Knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), How Does Learning Happen?, and ELECT is considered an asset.

Safe Food Handler

Certification is considered an asset.

Valid Criminal Record

Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required. Must provide a health assessment, TB test, and up-to-date immunization records as required.

Criminal Record

Checks must be renewed every five years, with annual offence declarations completed in accordance with organizational policy. Ability to safely lift up to 30 pounds, navigate stairs, participate in active play, and accompany children on community outings and aquatic activities as required. Ability to perform physical duties including frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching,



reaching, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, illness, and bodily fluids.

Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues while contributing effectively as a collaborative team member. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Ability to follow direction from supervisors and Registered Early Childhood Educators while exercising sound judgment and initiative.

Comfortable working in a technologically supported environment and using digital platforms for communication, documentation, and daily operations. Strong organizational skills with the ability to assist in the preparation and implementation of age-appropriate activities and learning experiences. Commitment to professionalism, ongoing learning, and participation in required training and professional development opportunities.

Excellent attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm and responsive in a fast-paced childcare environment.
