Position Title: Business Practices Instructor – Part-time, Casual

Department: Pacific Horticulture College

Reports To: Senior Educational Administrator

Start/End Dates: Instruction from October until November with a possibility of continuing in future program years

Hours: Wednesday mornings from 9:00-12:15.

Rate of Pay $50.00/hour

Background The Pacific Horticulture College (PHC) is located at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific in Victoria, BC. The mission of the PHC is to provide excellence in horticulture training, enabling students to maximize employment opportunities while encouraging environmental stewardship of green space.

Established in 1987, the Pacific Horticulture College (PHC) offers full-time and part-time training opportunities in all four levels of the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship, which can lead a nationally recognized Red Seal designation. The PHC is designated by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) and is a SkilledTradesBC (STBC) designated training provider. The mission of the PHC is to provide excellence in horticulture training, enabling students to maximize employment opportunities while encouraging environmental stewardship of green space.

Position Description The PHC is seeking an instructor coordinate, facilitate, and teach sessions for students enrolled in the Landscape Horticulture Certificate Program. This course provides students with practical skills and strategies for obtaining employment in the horticulture industry, as well as an introduction to the principles and practices of starting and operating a small horticultural business.

The course provides students with opportunities to explore career pathways, develop employment skills,



and gain an understanding of the key considerations involved in establishing their own horticultural business. Topics include employment preparation, business planning, basic legal requirements, marketing, client relations, and other essential knowledge for successfully entering the horticulture industry or becoming a small business owner.

This position involves, but is not limited to, the following:

- Preparing and organizing learning activities based on course learning objectives and the current needs and opportunities within the horticulture industry
- Providing instruction and practical learning opportunities related to employment preparation, job searching, resume and cover letter development, interviewing, and professional communication
- Supporting students in identifying employment opportunities and career pathways within the landscape horticulture industry
- Introducing students to the principles and processes involved in starting and operating a small horticultural business
- Providing instruction on basic business planning, including identifying services, establishing goals, pricing, budgeting, and developing a basic business model
- Introducing students to basic legal and regulatory considerations associated with operating a horticultural business
- Providing opportunities for students to develop and present a basic business or marketing plan
- Assessing students' knowledge and skills through written,



practical, presentation, and project-based formats
- Communicating with students and staff by email and in person

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for creating a valuable, practical, and well-rounded learning experience that prepares students for employment in the horticulture industry and provides them with the foundational knowledge and confidence to explore self-employment and small business opportunities.

Experience · Minimum two years of experience in instructing groups is preferred

· Minimum five years of relevant horticulture industry experience is preferred

Education

· Degree, diploma, or certificate in horticulture or related field; Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal in Landscape Horticulture or equivalent preferred

· Instructional Skills Workshop or other teaching course is preferred, but arrangements will be made with the successful candidate to obtain teacher training
