Position Purpose

Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA) was created in 2013 as a powerful and unifying voice for eight Nlaka’pamux Bands regarding the Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the eight Participating Bands. Headquartered in Merritt, BC, with a workforce of over 60, CNA provides training and job readiness along with cultural, social, and technical programming to the over 3035 members of the eight Participating Bands.

Working collaboratively with management, employees, and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the Health, Safety, and Wellness Specialist will help ensure CNA meets its legislative and regulatory responsibilities while continuously strengthening its health and safety practices beyond minimum requirements. This role will coordinate day-to-day health and safety activities, training, documentation, incident prevention and follow-up, and employee wellness initiatives. The position will also provide limited support for fleet and driver safety.

Primary Duties

- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of CNA’s occupational health and safety program,
- Help ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, policies, and organizational requirements,
- Identify opportunities to strengthen health, safety, and wellness practices beyond minimum compliance standards,
- Develop, review, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, emergency plans, forms, and resources,
- Conduct or coordinate workplace inspections, hazard assessments, risk assessments, and corrective action follow-up,
- Participate in incident, injury, near-miss, and hazard investigations,
- Maintain accurate and confidential health and safety records, statistics, training records, and supporting documentation,
- Support injury reporting, return-to-work planning, emergency preparedness, evacuation drills, and first aid readiness,
- Provide administrative and technical support to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee,
- Coordinate and deliver employee orientations, safety training, refresher training, and awareness activities,
- Monitor required training, certifications, and renewal dates,
- Provide practical and respectful health and safety advice to employees and management,
- Support safe practices for fieldwork, community-based work, contractors, visitors, lone workers,



and workplace travel,
- Provide limited fleet safety support, including driver safety resources, vehicle safety concerns, emergency supplies, incident follow-up, and training needs,
- Coordinate workplace wellness initiatives that support employee well-being, connection, and a healthy workplace culture,
- Promote awareness of psychological health and safety, respectful workplaces, stress management, fatigue, burnout prevention, and available employee supports,
- Support culturally safe, inclusive, and accessible approaches to workplace health and wellness,
- Identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for prevention and provide recommendations to management, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by Management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and good operating practices,
- Knowledge of workplace wellness, psychological health and safety, and respectful workplace principles,
- Knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, and injury prevention,
- Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and support practices that meet or exceed minimum compliance standards,
- Ability to develop and deliver clear, practical, and engaging employee training,
- Solid advisory, communication, facilitation, documentation, and organizational skills,
- Ability to build respectful and collaborative relationships with employees, management, committees, contractors, and external partners,
- Ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality,
- Strong initiative, judgment, attention to detail, and follow-through,
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems,
- Understanding of cultural safety and the importance of incorporating nłeʔképmx values, perspectives, and ways of knowing into workplace practices,
- Respect for nłeʔkepmxcín and an interest in supporting the visibility, revitalization, and appropriate use of the language within the workplace, and
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a growing, community-focused organization.

Experience and Requirements
- Post-secondary in occupational health and safety, a related field, or equivalent experience,
- Experience supporting occupational health and safety programs, workplace inspections,



hazard assessments, incident investigations, corrective actions, or employee training is an asset,
- Experience supporting workplace wellness or psychological health and safety initiatives is an asset,
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations or communities is an asset,
- Experience supporting emergency preparedness, injury management, return-to-work planning, or fleet and driver safety is considered an asset,
- A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence strongly preferred and/or reliable transportation,
- Ability to travel to participating communities and other work locations, as required, and
- Satisfactory submission of a Vulnerable Sector Check and Driver’s Abstract.

Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the CNA office at 2025 Granite Ave, Merritt BC, with the expectation of field work as needed,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
