Community Classroom Program Teacher (Grades 7–12)
Roland Michener Secondary School is located in the town of Slave Lake in northern Alberta, in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River, approximately 257 km north of Edmonton on the southeast shore of Lesser Slave Lake at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 88.
Roland Michener Secondary School is a Grade 7 to 12 school with an enrollment of approximately 620 students and 60 staff. About The Community Classroom Program The Community Classroom Program supports students in Grades 7 to 12 who face moderate to severe challenges in cognitive, behavioural, emotional, and developmental areas. Students in this program may have clinical diagnoses related to physical, sensory, medical, or behavioural disabilities, and require a highly structured, supportive environment to thrive in an educational setting.
The Successful Teacher Will
- Provide individualized instruction and supervision tailored to each student’s unique needs
- Support students in developing academic, communication, personal, and social skills
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction
- Foster self-management, hygiene,
coping, and problem-solving abilities appropriate to each student’s developmental level
- Deliver instruction in social skills, anger management, and positive behaviour strategies
- Maintain a protected, structured classroom with predictable routines and clear expectations
- Facilitate inclusive experiences with the broader student population and community (e.g., field trips, school-wide activities)
- Collaborate with support staff, families, and outside agencies to meet student needs
Requirements
- Completed Bachelor of Education Degree
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate or proof of application from Alberta Education Teacher Certification
- TQS Category placement or proof of application from the Alberta Teachers’ Association
- Original, acceptable, recent Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (less than six months old)
- Experience or coursework in special education, inclusive education, or working with students with diverse needs is a strong asset
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and individualized program planning (IPP) is considered an advantage
