Reporting to the Custodial and Security Services Manager, the Custodian performs routine cleaning duties within assigned facilities, contributing towards providing a safe and accessible, invitingly clean, and comfortable, functionally enriched and well-maintained campus environment through service excellence.

This position will work closely with the custodial services team to provide comprehensive cleaning and housekeeping services to maintain an excellent standard of hygiene and appearance for the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) campus.

We are hiring for two Custodians (Night Shift).

The night shift is from midnight to 8:00 am. A shift differential of $2.00 / hour will be applied to the salary.

Responsibilities

General Cleaning &

- Facility Maintenance

- Performs individual and general cleaning of offices, classrooms, and other rooms, including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and emptying waste and recycling containers.
- Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of assigned facilities to established safety, good order, and service-level standards.




- Performs deep cleaning and periodic cleaning of campus facilities as required.
- Cleans and disinfects dormitory common areas, including kitchens, bathrooms, recreation rooms, hallways, stairways, and other shared spaces.

Washroom &

- Floor Care

- Cleans and maintains washrooms, including doors, fixtures, walls, windows, and related areas, and replenishes supplies as required.
- Performs floor care and cleaning, including dry and damp mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet cleaning.
- Cleans and maintains doors, fixtures, ceilings, walls, windows, and other surfaces as part of floor and facility maintenance.

Waste Management &

- Specialized Cleaning

- Collects, handles, sorts, and disposes of appropriately segregated waste and recycling streams.
- Responds to and cleans spills and other extraordinary waste, including biohazards such as bodily fluids, unpleasant-smelling materials, and other potentially unappealing situations, using appropriate discretion and established procedures.
- Appropriately uses chemicals, cleaning materials, powered and non-powered equipment, tools, and required personal protective equipment.

Health, Safety, &

- Emergency Response

- Follows training provided and instructions received from lead hand and supervisory staff regarding occupational health and environmental safety, cleaning procedures and materials, and prioritization of work.
- Promotes health and safety and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policies, procedures, and safe work practices required by the University and applicable health and safety legislation.
- Contributes to and supports a positive safety culture among support staff.
- Administers First Aid, if qualified.

Departmental Support





- Supports departmental activities as required.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- High School diploma or GED is required.
- 1 year of relevant custodial experience is an asset.
- Building Service Worker or Basic Custodial Technician Certification training would be considered an asset.
- Work experience in a major institutional sector(s), such as education, post-secondary education, medical / hospital or service industry, is preferred.
- A valid class 5 Driver License is an asset.
- First Aid, CPR, AED, WHMIS would be considered an asset.
- Ability to pass a clear criminal record check is required.

Working Conditions

- Physically demanding.
- Lifting/carrying: Regularly, 10kg (25lbs), often over 20kg (50lbs).
- Reaching: Regularly, both high and low, awkward angle/position, equipment.
- Climbing: Regularly, stairs and ladders.

- Walking continuously.

- Campus is large, (14.1 acres) and contains 10 buildings.
- Current total gross floor area on the main campus is 25,084 m 2 (270,000 ft 2)

- May be exposed to dust and biohazardous materials, including bodily fluids, vomit, urine, blood etc., requiring appropriate handling and disposal.
- Will be required to walk indoors and outdoors on even and uneven surfaces.
