Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP is a full-service Heritage, Environmental, and Forestry resource management company based in Enderby, BC. Current Opportunity: We’re hiring a Director of Finance to oversee all the Financial and accounting compliance for the Development Corporation and its affiliates LLPs (the companies). Ensuring that financial systems, policies, procedures, internal controls, and accounts are well-designed and operating effectively. This includes directing the finance team's preparation and maintenance of financial records and reporting systems to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant results, as well as conducting an annual review of the Companies' financial administration systems to recommend improvements and strengthen procedures for identifying and mitigating financial reporting and fraud risks.
The Director of Finance also oversees the tracking of all receipts and expenditures to support annual audits, leads preparation of the annual budgets and any related amendments while ensuring proper debt servicing, and ensures the timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. This role oversees the financial components of Board reporting including short, medium, and long-term plans, projections, and priorities monitors the Companies' compliance with agreements and funding arrangements, and ensures the Board has the documentation and financial information it needs to carry out its responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to the CEO, and senior leadership team.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely financial recording and reporting.
- Prepare consolidated financial statements, variance analysis, and KPI reporting for Council, Finance Committee, funders, and auditors.
- Manage the annual external audit process and act as primary liaison with auditors.
- Ensure compliance with funding agreements (ISC, FNHA, and other federal/provincial funders), the First Nations Financial Transparency Act where applicable, and Nation financial bylaws/policies.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, funder-specific reporting structures, and grant/contribution tracking across multiple funding streams
- Lead the annual operating and capital budget process in collaboration with department managers and program leads.
- Monitor departmental spending against approved budgets and advise managers on variances and corrective action.
- Support proposal and grant budget development in partnership with program and administrative staff.
- Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate finance department staff; build internal capacity and succession readiness.
- Present financial reports and recommendations at Council meetings, Finance Committee meetings, and community/membership meetings as required.
- Foster collaborative, respectful working relationships across departments, with Chief and Council, and with external partners, funders, and auditors.
- Uphold confidentiality, cultural respect, and community accountability in all financial dealing
- Develop, implement, and monitor financial policies, procedures, and internal controls consistent with First Nation financial administration laws and best practice.
- Lead long-term financial planning, multi-year budgeting, and cash flow/reserve management to support the Nation's economic and community development goals.
- Advise on the financial implications of own-source revenue initiatives,
economic development corporations, and Nation-owned businesses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (required).
- CPA designation;
- Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) or progress toward it considered a robust asset.
- Equivalent combination of education and progressive senior financial management experience will be considered.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive financial management experience, including at least 2–3 years in a senior leadership or director-level role.
- Experience working within a First Nation government, Indigenous organization, or public-sector/non-profit multi-funder environment strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with government/funder reporting (ISC, FNHA), multi-entity consolidation, and annual audit management.
- Supervisory experience leading a finance team.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP/PSAS, budgeting, forecasting, and internal control frameworks.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Adagio, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and integrity in handling confidential and politically sensitive information.
