Description
SSE Operations Staff within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Electronics Makerspace Technician for approximately 6 months.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Technical Services, the Electrical MakerSpace Technician will focus on the improvement and revitalization of spaces within the Schulich School of Engineering. In addition, frequent interactions with faculty, staff and students will require a high level of discretion, flexibility and integrity to ensure positive outcomes.
Potential exposure to hazardous situations (e.g. hazardous materials, stored energy, etc.) may be present within the laboratory setting and the incumbent must be knowledgeable and capable of maintaining a safe work setting. This role also has moderate physical demands including long periods of standing, walking considerable distances and frequent lifting up to 25 kg.
The Electrical MakerSpace Technician will be expected to work full-time hours (35 hours per week); however, during peak times, flexibility in working hours is essential as evening and weekend work may be required. This position is on-campus and not suitable for remote work schedule.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Provide technical assistance to Technical Managers, Principal Investigators, Lab Managers, Department Heads, Technicians, and other University stakeholders by leading the restoration of poorly utilized space within the Schulich School.
- Maintain a safe, courteous, and professional working environment.
- Establish positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Effective and compliant elimination of hazardous chemicals, unused equipment, waste and general clutter.
- Required to produce bi-annual reports of student team activities related to hazard assessments, safety training and hazardous material usage and disposal.
- Responsible for ensuring university close out procedures for laboratories are completed, documented and the information is disseminated to the appropriate stakeholders.
- Responsible for the on-going production of hazard assessments and standard operating procedures as required for accreditation purposes.
- May be required to catalogue and maintain data on laboratories and other workspaces within the Schulich School.
- Assist Principal Investigators with hazard assessments and inspections of undergraduate and research labs as required.
- Required to coordinate the dismantling, removal and disposal of unused equipment within the laboratories as required.
- Coordinate the disposal and removal of chemicals and hazardous materials from the laboratory environment.
- Participate in ongoing training (including Archibus, Chematix and Peoplesoft) to ensure all work complies with the latest safety and other standards.
- Required to assist Academic, Technical staff and undergraduate students with lab clean ups as required.
- Will be required to identify chemicals and hazardous materials and ensure safe handling and storage procedures are in place.
- Must work closely with stakeholders in a collaborative manner to ensure that the process has a successful outcome and that all realistic expectations are met.
- Be able to exercise diplomacy and discretion when dealing with difficult situations or clients, while maintaining focus on the task at hand.
- Work independently with the capability to prioritize tasks and make decisions to ensure projects are completed in a timely fashion.
- Other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
- Post secondary Degree/Diploma as an Engineering Technologist or a related field; and five or more years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Certified in First aid, CPR, H2S training, WHMIS, Emergency Warden Training, and control of hazardous energy is a desirable asset.
- A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
- Knowledge of Environmental, Health & Safety legislation and regulations as well as standard industry practices (including hazard assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) within the University environment combined with previous experience in this area is required.
- Proficiency with basic lab instrumentation such as: oscilloscope, multimeter, power supply, function generator etc. is required.
- Familiar with Arduino, C++, Raspberry Pi, and Python is required.
- Ability to troubleshoot students' circuits and code is required.
- Experience with Altium, DipTrace, or similar PCB design software is an asset.
- Experience with LTspice, Multisim, or similar SPICE-based circuit simulator is an asset.
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), as well as strong listening skills are required.
- Requires strong analytical, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Must be highly goal-driven and exhibit the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Able to work within a collaborative setting with others to set clear priorities while managing multiple timelines and objectives.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
- Familiarity with CEC, microcontrollers, FPGA, IoT protocols, network communications, reflow ovens, robotics, and control systems is an asset.
- Previous experience using and safely maintaining hand tools is required.
- Previous experience working in a University or Post-secondary institutional setting is desired.
- Previous experience with hazardous material disposal procedure and processes.
