We are seeking an experienced Fire Protection Engineer (P.Eng.) to join our engineering project team. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and expertise in fire protection and loss prevention engineering for industrial EPC projects executed from the Calgary office, ensuring safe and code-compliant designs for facilities in Alberta and other Canadian jurisdictions.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience and knowledge in fire protection philosophy; firewater demand and hydraulic calculations; fire pump, hydrant, monitor, sprinkler, deluge, foam, clean-agent, passive fire protection, and fireproofing design; Fire & Gas detector mapping; hazardous area and facility layout interfaces; vendor package review; and multidisciplinary coordination. Working knowledge of applicable NFPA, Alberta Building Code, Alberta Fire Code, CSA, API, and client standards is required.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for the preparation, review, and authentication of fire protection engineering deliverables for Canadian industrial facilities, including both greenfield and brownfield EPC projects.
? Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute fire protection and loss prevention engineering activities from concept through detailed design, construction support, commissioning, and start-up.
- Develop and review fire protection philosophies, firewater system design criteria, firewater demand calculations, hydraulic analyses, and equipment specifications.
- Design and review fire detection, alarm, suppression, sprinkler, deluge, foam, gaseous suppression, hydrant, monitor, and fire pump systems, as applicable.
- Review escape routes, emergency egress arrangements, safety procedures, muster points, and emergency response provisions to ensure alignment with applicable codes, project requirements, and facility layouts.
- Develop and review Fire & Gas detector layouts and mapping studies, coverage assessments, cause-and-effect requirements, and interfaces with control systems.
- Review passive fire protection, fireproofing, fire barriers, equipment spacing, access, egress, muster areas, and emergency response provisions.
- Apply applicable Alberta and Canadian building and fire codes, NFPA standards, CSA standards, API recommended practices, and project/client requirements.
- Prepare and review calculations, datasheets, specifications, requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor drawings, reports, and design change documentation.
- Coordinate with process, piping, mechanical, electrical, control systems, civil, structural, HSE, and layout disciplines to resolve design interfaces.
- Provide construction, field, commissioning, and regulatory support, including responses to technical queries and review of deviations and Management of Change items.
- Authenticate professional engineering documents within the engineer’s area of competence and in accordance with APEGA and company professional-practice requirements.
✅ Mandatory Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered and in positive standing with APEGA (Alberta) is MANDATORY. EGBC registration, or eligibility to obtain it, is considered an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering from an accredited university.
- 7+ years of progressive experience in fire protection, loss prevention, or process safety engineering within Oil & Gas, LNG, power generation, petrochemical, or heavy industrial EPC projects.
