2.0 Indigenous Language Education Teacher (2 positions) at:

1 - École St. Joseph School & 1 - École St. Patrick High School

Beginning: September 2026

We are seeking a dedicated Indigenous Languages Education Teacher to help preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages through meaningful, community-centered education.

This position reports to the Principal. In this role, you will develop and deliver culturally relevant language lessons, incorporate traditional knowledge and teaching methods, and support students in building fluency and pride in their heritage.

Responsibilities include creating curriculum materials, assessing student progress, collaborating with Elders and community members, and fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about language preservation, has strong communication skills, and is committed to supporting Indigenous cultural continuity through education.

Yellowknife Catholic Schools has been providing quality publicly funded education to northern students for over sixty-five years. We are the only faith-based district in the Northwest Territories. Although we are a Catholic school district, we welcome families of all faiths.

Our district has three schools, Tundra Tots (Daycare), After School Program and one technical center with approximately 230 staff members and 1500 students.

We offer programming in English and French from JK - 12, as well as Core Willideh Yati and Core French. We have a strong Indigenous Language and Culture Education program that combines the Dene Kede curriculum and on-the-land experiences with traditional ways of knowing and doing. As a district, we are committed to deepening our work in recognizing the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Calls to Action.

Required Education and Recommended Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience

● Bachelor of Education with NWT Teaching Certificate

● Ability to speak Wiiliideh or Tlicho





● Minimum of five years of teaching experience

● Knowledge of Dene Kede and Indigenous language education programming

● Experience in gathering, analyzing and reporting data

● Experience with self-directed research for the planning of educational opportunities

● Experience with a variety of teaching strategies

● Willing and is able to provide professional development opportunities to educational staff

● Knowledge of social, community and other challenges experienced by Indigenous students and families

● Experience in a northern setting and an understanding of Indigenous cultures

● A Vulnerable Sector Check is a requirement

● Ability to plan and engage in Indigenous culture-based activities on the land and in the classroom
