Job Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer independently manages building mechanical engineering projects from concept through completion, delivering technical solutions that support Sustainable Projects Group’s energy efficiency, sustainability, and building performance initiatives. This role requires current Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA and direct experience in building mechanical systems, HVAC, and energy efficiency.

Working in a remote-first environment, the Mechanical Engineer manages multiple projects, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, prepares engineering documentation, and delivers projects on schedule and within budget. The successful candidate works independently, stays organized, and maintains regular communication with project teams.

Responsibilities:

Project Management:

- Independently manage multiple mechanical engineering projects from initiation through completion.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
- Coordinate project activities with internal teams, clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors.




- Monitor project progress and proactively identify and resolve technical or project-related issues.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with client expectations.

Mechanical Engineering and Design:

- Prepare and review building mechanical system designs, including HVAC designs, calculations, specifications, and technical reports.
- Assess existing building mechanical systems and recommend improvements to system performance and energy efficiency.
- Review drawings, equipment selections, and design documentation for accuracy and quality.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Integrate energy efficiency, sustainability, and building performance objectives into mechanical engineering assessments and designs.

Client and Stakeholder Management:

- Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
- Participate in client meetings and present technical information in a clear and professional manner.
- Respond to client questions and provide ongoing project updates.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure successful project execution.

Quality and Documentation:

- Ensure technical reports, engineering documentation, and project deliverables are complete, consistent, and ready for submission.
- Maintain organized project records and documentation.
- Perform quality reviews of engineering work prior to submission.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and project delivery.





Additional Responsibilities:

- Support business development activities by providing technical input on proposals and project opportunities.
- Stay current with industry best practices, codes, and emerging technologies.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Must Have Qualifications:

- Current Qualified Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA is mandatory. Eligibility for registration alone does not meet this requirement. Engineers-in-Training (EITs) will not be considered.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, including direct experience in building mechanical systems, HVAC, and energy efficiency.

- Strong understanding of applicable building codes, engineering standards, and building mechanical systems.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant engineering design and documentation software, such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Bluebeam.

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada .

Preferred Qualification:

- Experience with building retrofits.

Working Environment:

- Remote-first position requiring a high degree of independence and accountability.
- Must be comfortable managing projects with minimal supervision while maintaining consistent communication with project teams.

- Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage workload effectively.
- Occasional travel to project sites or client meetings may be required.
- Preference will be given to candidates located in Alberta, particularly Calgary or Edmonton.
