The Radiation Protection Group at TRIUMF is dedicated to enhance the quality of radiation tracking in the facility through the development of recent systems and equipment, and validating the new facilities that are being developed with simulation codes. This student position offers an opportunity to contribute to this effort by contributing to radiation simulation coding and by commissioning new equipment, such as gamma-ray HPGe spectroscopy detectors, and working with other systems for environmental monitoring radiation. As a student, the main duties will include:

- Implementing geometries to perform numerical simulations with existing radiation simulation codes in order to evaluate the shielding designs of future TRIUMF facilities.
- Installing and commissioning of radiation detectors and monitors.
- Analyzing of experimental data from calibration tests using ROOT (C++ framework).
- Implementing known mathematical models to fit the data.
- Provide reports. The student will acquire experience in both hands-on detection systems for radiation systems, and computing programming on simulation codes. In addition, the student will also be encouraged to attend the student lectures and seminars offered by TRIUMF’s student programs.Skills learned during this work experience: Through this work experience, the student will learn about environmental radiation sources, the characterization of radioactive materials, as how to perform experimental measurements using nuclear detection systems. The student will also develop skills in data analysis using the ROOT framework, and simulation codes using FLUKA, which are widely used tools in nuclear and particle physics. Additionally, the student will also gain experience in the maintenance of radiation detectors, relevant safety protocols, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).Qualifications: • The candidate should be enrolled in a Physics, Engineering Physics or Computing Science program.
- Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of programming in C/C++ (or other relevant languages (Python, JAVA...)).
- Personal interest in the field of nuclear physics,

environmental radiation or other related fields.
- Basic understanding of electronics.
- No experience outside academia is required.NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:The incumbent will have the possibility to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.Skills required:Detectors, Ionizing Radiation, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, Physics, Radiation Detection, Radiation Protection, Radiation Safety, Radiation Safety Training, Safety ProtocolsTRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, is situated on the vibrant south campus of the University of British Columbia, nestled within the beautiful Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, BC.At TRIUMF, we value our employees and are committed to providing a competitive total rewards package.
