The Lactation Consultant will provide care to antepartum and postpartum women and their newborns. Through this role, the Lactation Consultant will work to improve patient care, population health outcomes, evidence based practice and advance nursing practice related to breastfeeding. There will be an ongoing focus to support and educate staff and lactating women and their families to promote a breastfeeding friendly setting in hospital.
The Lactation
Consultant will also facilitate effective collaboration between HHS and community services and other obstetrical facilities with the goal of promoting a continuum of integrated services from the hospital into the community setting.
- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Certification
- Current BCLS and NRP certification
- Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in the assessment of women during both antepartum and postpartum periods
- Demonstrated knowledge,
skill and ability in newborn assessment
- Current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of women who are pregnant and/or lactating
- Demonstrated commitment to evidence based practice
- Demonstrated ability to work within hospital policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate change in clinical practice
- Demonstrated ability to understand population health data and use it to influence health outcomes
- Evidence of continuing education initiatives related to perinatal nursing and lactation
- Demonstrated teaching and presentation skills to promote staff development
- Demonstrated ability to develop patient education materials and to facilitate learning for women and families based on their individual needs
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the healthcare team
