Royal Machine Solutions is looking for a practical, hands-on Mechanical Designer to join our team in Brantford, Ontario.
We design and manufacture custom conveyors, material-handling equipment, machine guarding, platforms, and other industrial equipment. This position is suited to someone who enjoys taking a project from an initial concept through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, and installation.
The successful candidate must understand that good design goes beyond creating a model in SolidWorks. We are looking for someone who considers how components will be manufactured, assembled, installed, maintained, and used in the real world.
Responsibilities Develop concepts and detailed designs for custom industrial equipment
Create 3D models, fabrication drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials using SolidWorks
Design conveyors, guarding, frames, platforms, and mechanical assemblies
Select purchased components such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, belting, and hardware
Work directly with customers, suppliers, fabricators, and installers
Visit customer sites to take measurements and gather project information
Indepenently estimate projects
Support, purchasing, fabrication, assembly, and installation
Review designs for manufacturability, serviceability, safety, and cost
Revise drawings and designs based on production and customer feedback
Help improve our products, standards, and internal design processes
Required Qualifications Robust working knowledge of SolidWorks
Mechanical engineering degree, engineering technology diploma, or equivalent practical experience
Hands-on experience in manufacturing, fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, or industrial maintenance
Ability to create clear and accurate manufacturing drawings
Understanding of mechanical components, materials, tolerances, and fabrication methods
Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities
Able to communicate effectively with customers and shop-floor employees
Valid driver’s licence and ability to attend local customer sites
Clear and robust verbal communication skills
The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a practical designer who is comfortable both at a computer and knowledge of the the shop floor. They take ownership of their work, ask good questions, and look for simple, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
A willingness to learn is expected, but we are looking for someone who can bring useful mechanical, manufacturing, or SolidWorks experience to the team from day one. Experience with lean manufacturing, process improvement, conveyors, automation, or custom equipment would be an asset.
What We Offer Competitive hourly wage based on experience
Varied custom projects rather than repetitive design work
Opportunities to participate in projects from concept through installation
A flexible role with room to grow and take on additional responsibility
Direct involvement with manufacturing and real-world problem-solving
