Role Overview
We are seeking a Junior UX Designer to support the design and delivery of intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly digital experiences for web and mobile applications. The successful candidate will have experience with user-centered design, user research, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and stakeholder collaboration.
The role requires strong proficiency with modern UX/UI design and prototyping tools such as Figma and Canvas , along with an understanding of accessibility, the Ontario Design System , and the Digital Service Standard .
Key Responsibilities
- UX/UI Design & User Experience
- Create effective, user-friendly, visually appealing, and accessible interfaces.
- Design overall product functionality to deliver a high-quality user experience.
- Develop and iterate designs based on user testing, feedback, and usability findings.
- Design interfaces for web, mobile, digital displays, publications, media, and other creative materials as required.
- Apply a user-centered design approach throughout the product lifecycle.
- Identify design problems and develop practical, elegant, and user-focused solutions.
- Make strategic UX and design decisions related to existing and new product features.
- User Research & Discovery
- Plan and conduct user research, interviews, surveys, and usability activities.
- Manage end-to-end user research activities, from participant recruitment through synthesis.
- Translate research findings into actionable design recommendations.
- Develop sitemaps, user flows, customer/user journey maps, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
- Gather and analyze user feedback to improve and configure existing interfaces.
- Facilitate the client's product vision through research, ideation, sketching, prototyping, and user testing.
- UX Workshops & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Define and lead UX projects, design workshops, and stakeholder alignment sessions.
- Work closely with business users and stakeholders to understand requirements and validate design decisions.
- Communicate design concepts, user experience considerations, and development processes clearly to diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, QA specialists, business stakeholders, and other project team members.
- Build effective working relationships while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
- Prototyping & Design Delivery
- Create and deliver wireframes, user stories, user flows, journey maps, mockups, and interactive prototypes.
- Optimize designs for a wide range of devices, screen sizes, and user interfaces.
- Use appropriate design and prototyping tools, including Figma, Canvas, and similar platforms.
- Ensure designs account for technical limitations and the appropriate use of web development technologies.
- Rapidly prototype, test, evaluate, and refine solutions based on user feedback.
- Accessibility & Ontario Digital Standards
- Incorporate accessibility principles into UX and interface design.
- Apply knowledge of accessibility testing and WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.
- Work effectively with the Ontario Design System.
- Apply knowledge of the Digital Service Standard to digital product design.
- Consider accessibility and inclusive design throughout the research, design, and testing process.

- Experience managing end-to-end user research from participant recruitment through synthesis.
- Proficiency with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Canvas, and similar platforms.

- Experience designing digital products with consideration for the emotional and human aspects of user experience.
- Experience conducting user research, interviews, and surveys and translating findings into actionable UX deliverables.
- Experience developing sitemaps, user flows, user journeys, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
- Experience designing and iterating product functionality based on user-testing results.
- Experience facilitating product vision through research, ideation, sketching, prototyping, and user testing.
- Experience identifying UX/design problems and developing effective solutions.
- Experience making strategic design and UX decisions for core and new features.
- Experience gathering user feedback and using it to improve existing interfaces.
- Solid teamwork, time management, deadline management, and client relationship skills.
Communications Skills – 30%
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive documentation, including reports, reviews, and assessments.
- Ability to communicate design concepts and development processes clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, QA specialists, business stakeholders, and project teams.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members at different organizational levels.
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, facilitation, and stakeholder communication skills.
Desirable Skills – 10%
- Knowledge of accessibility testing.
- Experience working with the Ontario Design System.
- Knowledge of the Digital Service Standard.
- Experience addressing complex design challenges involving legacy systems.
- Experience navigating complex stakeholder and approval relationships.
- Proficiency in accessibility-focused design and WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.
Prior Public Service / OPS Experience – 5%
- Previous experience working within the Ontario Public Service (OPS) or broader public-sector environment is considered an asset.
