Labrador Benefits Policy - Treasury Board Secretariat Department of Social Supports and Well-Being As part of the Innu Service Delivery Model, these positions will be responsible for providing social work services to the Labrador Innu Communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish as directed. Working in an Indigenous community with a diverse cultural background, the Social Worker II provides professional social work services to clients of the Department of Social Supports and Well-Being (SSWB), covering a spectrum of services and programs including Protective Intervention Services, Adoption Services, Youth Services and Community Youth Corrections, and In-Care and Residential services.

The Social

Worker II conducts risk and safety assessments; and provides counselling and case management for children, youth and families to address family dynamics and complex psychosocial factors. Other duties include screening, identifying and prioritizing referrals for service, developing intervention plans, consulting with other professionals as necessary, and completing documentation in accordance with qualified standards of practice, and policies and procedures of the department. The incumbent prepares reports, completes legal documents and provides testimony in court as required, conducts home or agency visits, and supports community-based services; and provides leadership to other staff including Community Services Workers, Social Assistance Workers, administrative support positions and graduate/undergraduate Social Work students.

Social work practice in the field of child welfare requires an ability to effectively intervene and provide support to children and families which may be in situations of crisis and emotional distress.



Self-awareness and self-care are important skills sets for this position.

The Social

Worker II adheres to the standards for client services in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics, Social Work Standards Practice and Departmental standards. Completion of a Bachelor of Social Work degree Experience working with children, youth and families Experience working in the field of child protection (asset) Completion of a Masters in Social Work with an Indigenous focus (asset) Experience working with Indigenous populations (asset) Knowledge of professional social work practice relating to well-being of children, youth and families Self-awareness and self-care Registered with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers (NLCSW) Recent and Satisfactory Criminal Record Check from local police Recent and satisfactory Child Protection Clearance Check Proof of valid class 5 driver’s license The successful candidate will be required to provide fly-in/fly-out support to clients of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish, as directed by the Employer. The successful candidate will fly-in/fly-out from locations within the Province.

There is a requirement for a flexible work schedule: 150 hours (a combination of 7.50 and 11.25 hour shifts) in a two week period, followed by two weeks off. Extensive requirement for travel to different locations as directed. These positions are considered to be on “travel status”, therefore are not eligible for Labrador Benefits as outlined in the Collective Agreement.

Travel costs and co-ed accommodations will be provided by the Department. This is a NAPE HP bargaining unit position and as per the Collective Agreement, applicants internal to the bargaining unit will be processed prior to other candidates.
