Nature of the Work & Responsibilities

NATURE OF THE WORK:

The job of student life counsellor involves planning, implementing, developing, leading, and evaluating activity programs associated with student life, relating to the institutional directions, strategic plan and success plan of the College particularly in the following sectors: sociocultural life, sports and outdoor activities, economic life and community life.

Specifically, the Student Life Counsellor in the First Peoples’ Centre will plan activities in the Centre in collaboration with College resources and support systems. The position plays an important role in the operations of the Centre and in relations with the Dawson community, and advances the Centre’s collaboration with external communities, stakeholders, support systems and partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Further establish and strengthen the relationships of the diverse Indigenous students and communities within Dawson College, and engage the larger Dawson community to have a sense of involvement and purpose in this regard;
- Support Indigenous students’ academic success by developing and administering advising and socio-cultural support systems that promote student engagement, retention, success and graduation;
- Advise and provide information to Indigenous students;
- Advise College faculty and staff, concerning matters related to Indigenous students;
- Work closely with the support staff in the Centre (social work technician and special education technician)
- Develop and manage relevant data and statistics for the Centre;
- Plan, organize, and implement a program for educating the larger Dawson community concerning sociocultural and historical matters related to Indigenous students, peoples, communities, and life;
- Research, identify,



and develop funding proposals from external sources to support long-range strategies;
- Assist in the development of a program to recruit of Indigenous students, and materials to support this program;
- Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers;
- Perform other related duties.

Qualifications & Conditions

QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization.

CONDITIONS:

- Experience working with or involvement with an Indigenous community or initiative.
- Experience overseeing students and volunteers, an asset.
- Familiarity with or fluency in one of the Indigenous languages spoken in Quebec, an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in dealing with individuals in difficult personal situations
- Ability to lead in a service-oriented environment, and act as a resource to other members of the team
- Proven ability to foster a positive work and study environment.
- Robust planning, organizing, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced oral and written English communication skills; basic oral and written French communication skills.
- Knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, an asset.
