Are you looking for a full time job in skilled trades with free training? Are you 18 years of age or older? Consider the Ship Repair and Fabrication "Try a Trade" training and employment pathway program with exposure to Industrial Painter, Millwright, and Welder.

9 weeks of skills training, followed by 8 weeks of paid work placement. Upon completion and if suitable, the candidate may be offered ongoing employment.

Mohawk College is offering this "Try a Trade" Training Program in partnership with Ontario Shipyards and Adult Basic Education Association.

Your FREE training will include:

- Technical skills development
- Workplace health and safety training
- Essential employment skills development
- Paid work placement in one of two locations: Hamilton and St. Catharines

Ontario Shipyards: Ontario Shipyards is a wholly Canadian-owned company operating three of the largest ship construction and repair facilities in Canada. Founded in 1987, Ontario Shipyards has grown into the largest Canadian ship repair and construction company on the Great Lakes. We are a trusted partner of the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian flagged commercial fleet.

Operating the largest number of dry dock assets in Canada, our shipyards in Hamilton, St. Catharines, and Thunder Bay offer a wide array of vessel life cycle services from new builds, repair, maintenance, conversions, and vessel recycling.

What do you need to succeed?

- Ability to commit to attending in-person classes and training for 9 weeks
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labour for long periods of time.




- High attention to detail is required to achieve quality standards.
- Ability to read and understand work orders.
- Completion of valid respirator fit test. Must be completed prior to employment.
- Ability to safely perform various physical tasks with the use of appropriate safety equipment as required, including but not limited to protective gear, harnesses, or other safety devices as part of daily responsibilities. All necessary safety equipment and training will be provided.
- Tasks may be repetitive and physically demanding, requiring the ability to perform consistent manual work over extended periods.
- Ability to work in different weather conditions

Job Types: Full-time, Apprenticeship, Internship / Co-op Pay: $21.00 per hour

In-school training at Mohawk College Stoney Creek Campus *October 5-December 4, 2026

*4 days/week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

*8:00 AM – 2:30 PM

- Are you interested and available to complete an 8-week work placement September 2-October 31 following the successful completion of the in-school training component? Hours are Monday-Friday 7am-4:40pm, 30-45 hours per week.
- Do you have a preference for work placement location (work placement will be offered with Ontario Shipyards at their Hamilton and St. Catharines locations).
